When did ZT stop milling out the lockbar side of the knife? Mine is serial #9440, bought from
blade hq, but yet has no milling on the inside of the titanium. Any ideas?

No one knows, it must have been a rolling change. It happens with a lot of makers. Certain things change and there are no official press releases.

Just wondering as all the pics I've seen they're milled out. I love the knife nonetheless, it's growing on me. Someone asked me about the lock side and I was going to point out the milling except, it wasn't there.

Lots of small changes have been made since it was released. The detent strength, the edge angles, the blade stops, lock bar inserts, stone washing finish/type to name some.

Your best bet would be to email/call KAI.

You wouldn't happen to have a scale would you? I'm curious what the milling does for weight savings.

The first 0560 I observed without the lock side milling was my 0560BW I purchased from Kershawguy on 12/13/2013. It was brought up a while ago and posted below. So it's been a little while that the milling has need omitted but as Rev stated is was probably a rolling change and who knows if the entire line has been changed over. I like the extra weight, slight but noticable.

Thank you for your email, we sincerely appreciate your interest in ZT knives. We stopped milling the lock side of the 0561 several years ago. We did this because after weighing the two side by side, the weight difference was so insignificant that it was determined not to be worth the effort (time and cost). Titanium being extremely light weight to begin with and the weight only slightly changing, we decided to save our efforts. I apologize that I don't have an exact date, but after talking with the design team, we cannot pinpoint it down. Thank you again for taking the time to write and have a great day.

Kind Regards,

This is the only folder I've seen without any milling in the lockbar, I think. I thought it was necessary to bend the lockbar back and forth, not to reduce weight. Anyhow, a lockbar without any milling is probably a good bit stronger than one with milling, right?

The lock reflief is milled on the other side. They are taking about pockets that use to get milled into the frame to lighten it. I think someone weighed them and it was only a few grams difference.

Ahh, that makes more sense. Thanks for clarifying.

The weight savings in absolute terms wasn't much but as a percentage of the knife's total weight it was significant. I had one version that was milled and one that was not. I compared the one that wasn't milled to what was in the specs at the time on their website when it was still mentioning the milling and the difference was about 5 oz if I recall correctly.

No way that's possible. The listed weight on KAIs website is 6.4oz.

okay. 0.5 oz. And it was a lower weight than 6.4oz when they were still touting the milled pockets. but even at 6 oz even for total weight, 0.5 oz is significant.

OK, now you made me reference my notes. Its an 11g difference which is .38oz.

Literally the weight of two nickels.

So it did make more than a nickels worth of difference ;) amarite?

IMO totally not worth the effort.
