My promotion-celebration purchase came in today, and I rushed to get it out of the box, check for lock failure, blade wiggle, etc - Rock solid, dead center, no lock slippage. Beautiful.

Then, I try the arm-shaving test.
The hell? It's digging up more skin than hair!

I was kinda expecting the exacto-laser-sharpness that higher-end Spydercos leave the factory with. I sharpened it just fine, and it took an edge beautifully (5 minutes with a ceramic stone), but that seems silly given the price.

Am I the only unlucky SOB that had to sharpen his/her 0561 out of the box?

I always have to sharpen every knife I get out of the box to reach a level I'm satisfied with regardless of price. I do hate it though when you have a knife worth a lot and you aren't sure if its a catch and release yet but it is too dull to be happy with from factory.

I don't worry about out of the box sharpness too much. I usually end up resharpening the blade in a couple of days. That way I know I have a good edge that is properly deburred.

Addendum - DAMN, does it take an edge. I sharpened it a little more, with a little closer of an eye, and it now has one of the sharpest edges I've seen on anything. Now I'm all re-psyched about this knife.

Gotta love that Elmax! Don't want to send you back to the stones or strops, but it gets even sharper! lol :D

It's always nicer to have your own edge just the way you like it anyways. =]
I've had knives(ZT 0550) that were less than satisfactory from the factory.
I just sharpened them up with my own edge and enjoyed my knife. =]

Congrats on the ZT.
