ZT 0770CF deassist?

Mine should be here this week. I've heard a ton about deassisting the 566 and have done so myself. I know the 770 is deassistable but is the action any good? I don't dislike speed safe so much as I just prefer manual. I have no issues leaving it assisted if that's the better way to go?

Also seeing a whole bunch of pictures wouldn't hurt my feelings any.

It takes about 2 minutes to remove the torsion bar, and reassemble. If you don't like it reinstall it and you would be good as new.

There have been a bunch of posts of successful 770 deassistings. With mine, the detent just doesn't hold it in place well enough. It feels non-existent, though it is indeed sitting in the hole. I have to run it with the ao bar unfortunately.

I much prefer the 770 assisted. I agree with previous post the detent isn't strong enough

It's going to depend on the knife. Since the knife was designed to be assisted primarily, they couldn't spend much time tuning all the detents. They put the holes in so the small minority who wanted to deassist them, could. I know most people on here (myself included) would likely prefer a manual k knife but we are a drop in the bucket. Jim used to comrade it to people who like manual transmissions. 9% of the car buying public but one of the loudest groups on the internet when it comes to cars.

There couldn't be a more better analogy.

Thanks and that's a good way of looking at it. I'm well aware that the majority of the knife buying population would prefer assisted. Sounds like this one might be like blur for me. Not a fan of that one deassisted.

Should be better than the blur deassisted.

I honestly don't find the SA to be that much of an annoyance. I'd prefer KVT, but I can live with SpeedSafe if I have to . . . especially if the knife warrants making the "sacrifice".

The 0770CF is something of a special case anyway. It's quite possibly the only knife ZT ever makes that I'd be willing to carry. And I, for one, am not going to let the fact that it's SA get in the way of that.

Got the knife today. My initial impressions... I love my beefy 566 and 550 but this knife is on another level. The spring assist isn't terrible but it is a little stiff and I'll probably pop it out tonight and see what that's all about.

Overall the fit and finish is excellent and this thing is going to get a ton of pocket time.

I have deassisted mine, also don't like the weak detent, and it also create a somewhat hollow sound that feel like I'm using a plastic knife.

3 months after I re-assisted it (is that the correct wording;-) . It failed to deploy due to a cracked torsion bar (same thing happened to my 0566Cf, both failed within 5 months after I bought both of them)

So now I'm forced to use it de-assisted again, still not a fan of the action and the sound, but I found if you push button it, it will open with more force and authority. the hollow sound is not so pronounced anymore.

Anyway no more AO knife for me.... :-(

I de-assisted mine and I won't go back. I have a 770cfM4 #601, so I am not sure of where the lacking detent issue shows up.

I took the spring out, stropped the surfaces and reassembled with some CRK grease. It took some tinkering to get it back centered, but it has held up fine since.
-Very smooth, though I can't rely on the detent alone to offer enough resistance to flip it. A sudden tap with my finger is enough to get it fully open every time though.

Key word "sudden" tap.

It takes a quick snap of the finger to deploy.

Don't like it.

It feels sluggish after being spoiled by a zt 450

I agree, it does take technique. But that being said, I will trade technique for M4.

To each their own.

I have handled the 450 and I honestly had to fight myself to put it down. It is a Really nice knife, if it isn't too small for you. But, I got a great price on a pre-owned 770cfm4, so I had to jump on it. I haven't thought about looking back.

Great action, materials, fit and finish.

I still long for M4, I can see where your coming from
