So I just got my ZT 0801 in the mail and I love the knife. One thing I noticed though is that there is about 1/4" of blade at the base (before the plunge line) which is not sharpened. it looks like it was intended to be sharpened, but just never got ground from the factory. Is this common, or are any others like this? I am considering sending it back, but I really don't want to let it go now that I have it; I am looking forward to a pimp job from Maprik. What do you think?

Throw a pic up, man. Let's see what you're talking about.

Here's mine. I'm still on the factory edge.

I wouldn't worry about it. While grownstars was ground in that area, the blade is still thick from the plunge and isn't sharp.

The only solution would be to put in a sharpening choil.

Both of mine are ground like Grownstars, if it bothered me I would grind it and sharpen it to match the rest of the edge.

I just got an 801 in a similar serial range (5359) and it too has the beginning of the edge dulled, I assumed purposefully so that it could be used as a choil. Coincidentally, Maprik modified mine too...

This. If you look at the edge of the blade down at the heel, you will see that the blade is sharpened to the point at which the blade starts to widen. There is no net gain in reducing the radius of that curve and continuing the edge further back, since that just creates other issues.

My plan was to use the factory edge till it could no longer cut. Then I could sharpen to my exact preference. So far, it's taking a little longer than I thought :D

To the OP, just use it as is. I can tell you're really pumped to own it, so just keep using it till you send it to get pimped. Hell, you can ask Maprik to clean up the entire edge of the blade before sending it back.

There are a lot of companies that do a less than stellar job sharpening that area... takes a while to fix on an edgepro depending on the steel.. just makes you realize that Knife Maker does not equal Knife Sharpener..

Since there is nothing to keep your finger from moving on to the sharp part of the blade, I would definitely keep your fingers behind the flipper. Nice looking blades, did you have Maprik do both in the same color?

Exactly. If anything, the person who sharpened the op's blade looks like they took greater care to make sure they only sharpened the sharpenable area of the blade and left the wide plunge area purposely bare.

I just got an 801 in the mail today #5127. Mine has the same grind as the OP, exactly. I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't follow.. I sharpen mine all the way to the flipper and can use the whole edge without a problem..

I doubt that. The thickness behind the edge in that unsharpened area would be too much. If you properly sharpen it to the flipper you would ruin the plunge line unless you added a sharpening choil.

I understand your point about not sharpening where it gets wider, but there looks to be a significant area which could have been sharpened to the same angle as the rest of the blade.
Again, I am not going to return I will use this and when I send it to Maprik he already said he can finish the edge for me. Just wanted to discuss. Pic of the edge.

Yes sir, they're both purple with satin flats. Outstanding anodizing, far superior to my Moon Mod 801 in every way.

Perhaps not all the way to the flipper in some cases but definitely a heck of a lot closer than what his is showing. And this is on knives without a flipper too. Regardless of what you doubt or not. :-)

Okay, my unsharpened area is about half as big as in this photo.

I guess your edge could be brought back a tiny bit, but I certainly would not be concerned about it. That really is not a portion of the blade that you are going to use.

For reference, here is mine (serial # 5430):
