Hey everyone-

So I had an issue caused by me on my 801. I was trying to take it down and I wound up stripping one of the screws that holds the standoffs in place in the scale area of the knife.

I called ZT and was informed that they couldnt ship me a replacement due to the fact that that the model was too new and they were using them for production models.

Again, no problem. My fault.

So the middle standoff is out of the knife.

What I want to know is does any one sell new standoffs that I could use to replace the factory ones? I noticed that the factory standoffs have a bit of a "protrusion" at each end, they arent flush.

So any thoughts? I would replace all 3 with new screws too...

Any sources and or sizes I would need to look for?

thanks!

Drew

I'd just wait a little while, zt will probably be able to get you a replacement before long

you are probably right. I just looked online and I am not seeing much out there that would be a drop in part.

ZT told me I could send it in and they would take care of it no problem, but I dont really see the need. Missing the middle stand off is not a big deal. I will just wait until they can release the parts out to me and deal with it then.

Thanks-

Drew

The screws are T6's. I've had the same thing happen to me and was able to use a T7 driver to remove the screw, and/or retighten the screw. Just apply pressure to the driver when unscrewing out, or screwing in.

You can measure the length of the standoffs, minus the the little nub that goes inside the handle, and find other standoffs of the same length from places such as knifekits.com or usaknifemaker.com.

Knife kits has something that looks like it would fit. Now I just have to figure out which size i need?

What brand of torx driver were you using? I had been using a no name brand until I bought a wiha set recently. They definitely make a difference. You are far less likely to strip a screw with them. They are about $8 each or $35-$40 for a set like I got. Between Kershaw and ZT you will need a t6, t8, and a t10.

Yup, I have a piece of crap Husky brand from the HD. Need to get some of those, I remember reading that sticky from the ZT forum a while back...

Yet another lesson learned....

Most of the time you can get by with a cheap set. It's those pesky ones that will get you. Just took my 560 apart for the first time today and had to use my cheaper fold out set cause I couldn't get enough grip on the wiha t10 (I got the micro set). The scales screws seemed to have that little extra bit of loctite on them. Think I still may get the wiha fold out set because I was sure I was going to strip one of them putting that much torque on them with my el cheapos. Luckily it held up.

that was the problem on my 0801. On the stripped screw, upon drilling it out, i found the thing to be basically welded into the threads of the back spacer/standoff with some kind of white colored thread locker. STRONG stuff!

I know it's a little late in this case, but I found if you'd heat the screw the thread locker would loosen enough to remove without issue. Using the tip of a soldering iron for a few seconds on the screw heads helped greatly when I disassembled a spyderco tenacious.
