Hi All,

My first post here... I am new to the knife world and I feel like I'm a child in a candy store... I feel like I've been missing out on all this and finally discovered it :)

What I have so far:
- Kershaw Blur (blue handle, stonewash)
- Kershaw Skyline (black handle, silver blade)
- Spyderco Sage 1 (carbon fiber handle, silver)

I really like the designs of the Zero Tolerance. I ran across the 0801 in a gun shop and I liked it a lot... loved the way it fits in my hand and loved its action. But they were selling it at MSRP and wouldn't budge, so I had to let it go...

Now, I need to tell my wife what I want for Christmas, and I'm seriously considering that 0801...

but I saw the black version of it online and it looks sweet too!

Any opinions?

I personally prefer the 801. I like the black and I have both, but the 801 keeps looking new while my black coated has obviously shown some wear with use. If you like black but are worried about it showing wear get a ZT0801BW. This has the Blackwash finish and does not show wear or use much at all. Regardless of your choice they are great knives!

Depends on what you like for color since that is a personal preference. I like the black just because its one of my favorite colors, while others will not since the black will fade overtime with use. Many prefer the clean look of the stonewashed blade since it will not show wear as easily. You should really take a look at the exchange section since I see quite a few zt 0801s pop up in the $100-120 range for a slightly used one.

I carried my 801 yesterday. I really love the way it fits my hand, and the balance feels perfect to me. Not really impressed with the black washed version, but admit, that all black version looks stunning to me.

It's had me on the verge of picking up another, just for the color. I held off only because my regular 801 is so sweet, and there are always going to be that one more knife that I just have to have. So I try my best to talk myself out of duplicates when I can. But sometimes I use the excuse that I need another for my son.

Like whitty said, the black will show wear more easily. While the natural titanium and Elmax are stonewashed, so it takes some pretty hard use to make normal wear show up.

I have both the regular and blackwashed versions. I thought about picking up a black one as well, but for a knife that will get some use, a stonewashed or blackwashed finish keeps it looking nice.

Thank you all for the responses...

I like BW versions on some knives, but don't like it on this one...

I work an office job... this knife will be mostly to open letters, amazon prime boxes and occasional food... not too heavy of use but I still wouldn't want it to show wear.

I think it sounds like I go for the regular version... amazon doesn't have the black one anyway, so I would've had to buy it from somewhere else, which I was very weary about. I LOVE amazon's incredible return policy.

Hi and welcome! I was going to reply to look at the blackwash as its the best of both worlds but I see you don't care for that and that you also don't want it to show wear so in that case I would recommend the original version. I would also like to point out that if you were looking for a little color you could contact one of our fine craftsmen here on BF and they could anodize the titanium handles any color you like!

I see you list that you have a blue skyline with a stonewash blade, what is the exact model # of that one if you don't mind me asking? There are a couple versions is the reason I'm asking.

Cheers,

-Justin

My Bad! I meant a Blue Blur and Black Skyline... flipped them in my original post.

I love my 0801BLK, but agree that it will show wear/use long before the other models (if that's a concern for you).

Based on your described usage, IMO the 0801 is a bit of overkill, weight-wise (but it's a totally lovable knife, so why not carry it if you like it). A coated blade will do fine for what you've described.

If you're going to beat the crap out of it, go with the regular version. I've used mine as my outdoor work beater on and off and it's been abused. If you catch the light right you can see all the scratches on it like this:

But usually it just looks like this from most angles, not bad at all:

I completely understand that I'm basically buying a Bugatti Veyron to drive once a week to go to the grocery store.... overkill to say the least.

I've been carrying my Spyderco Sage 1 to the office about 80% of the time, carrying the Blur about 20% of the time... I'm not really buying the knife cause I need its heft or strength, I'm buying it because it's a beautiful piece of work and I admire the craftsmanship that went in it.

I think I will buy the 0801 in the plain titanium and also buy a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 in camo and black blade... I think that's a good compromise ;)
