ZT 550 or 551?

If your choice was between these 2 which would you choose & why? I do like the look of the scales on the 551 better but other than that is there a major diff between the 2?
 
The other diffence between the G10 pattern is the blade steel.
Elmax or CPM-S35VN
I like both, but Elmax is better by a mile.
 
I just ordered a 551. I have a 550. I wanted the 551 after getting a 560. I really like Elmax. The 550 isn't bad, but the 551 is a limited one time run from what I understand.
 
I couldn't tell you which to get. I have the 0551 and love it. It was overly stiff when I first got it. So stiff I wondered if the detent was broken.

I was told to leave the knife open 90* overnight. That helped break it in a lot. After 3 overnights the knife is now butter.

I have owned Striders and other big well built knives. This 0551 is every bit as strong as the Striders I had and just as smooth as the Chris Reeve Sebenza I own and love.

This knife is a keeper. Mine is an EDC and a user. I have a small safe but knives do not belong in a safe. Not f you love them.

550 or 0551 either way I am sure you will be happy. Just remember the break in trick if it seems stiff to you.
 
bladehq has 551s in stock right now, apparently they are still producing this limited edition knife??

Much more likely that a few 0551s had just been sitting around on a distributor's shelves and, for whatever reason, only now finally made it to a dealer.

No prob, I ordered one too. I was just browsing bladehq hoping they might have found an extra tilt to sell since i missed out on that and to my surprise found the 0551..wonder what serial they will be
 
I ordered a 551 today from another place today. It was 199.00 I'm really stoked to get it. I really liked tge look of the scales on the handle better on the 551 is the main reason I went with it. I have never owned a knife this expensive or nice. A Manix 2 or Spyderco Delica has been the nicest folders I've ever owned.
 
I had just bought a 0550 because I didn't see a decent price on a new 0551 but oh well. I'm loving my 0550 and it's working just great for me, S35vn does seem slightly tougher and nicer than S30v but I will just have to pick up a 561 to try out Elmax :D

0551, just one #1564 to replace one I sold. This one shows some minor refinements. Only one secondary bevel for thumb-stud blade deployment. Seemingly more shallow 3d machining of the g10. The primary cut-out of the lock-bar seems to have been laser cut like some of the later numbered samples of the 0560. All in all, this 0551 seems more dialed in.

I'm truly enjoying breaking it in.

get a late number 0551, if you can.

is it no longer limited to a 1000 pieces? I'm gonna assume I'll prob get a late numbered 1 but who knows. Can you post a pic of yours?
 
I like the 0551 a little better, as I like the "brick" style G10 scale design more, but the scales are replaceable. I bought a second 0551 as I liked the knife so much. Evern after getting an 0560, I see the strengths of the 0551/0550 design. No worries on the 0550, so if you can't find an 0551 either new from a dealer, or on the secondary market (they seem to pop up pretty frequently though) get an 0550.

My understanding is that some of the productions of the 0551 didn't pass qc and so more were made to make that number up, but I think it is still limited- as to 1000 pieces, not sure. Someone with more info please chime in or correct...

I've had previous versions of the 0551 and I do like this rendition the best.
