ZT 561 clip screws too short

I tried switching the pocket clip to left side, tip up but the screws are too short. The brown scale isn't threaded and the screws won't reach the threaded liner. Anyone else having this problem? I contacted CS, but i got a form email response saying they'll send out more screws. I'm guessing they're going to be the same size...

I sent mine back to CS, they fixed the same issue but the clip still is not rigidly affixed to the knife. Chalk it up to design flaw.

Had the same problem with a Skyline. CS sent me a complete set of screws to the knife with a few extras. Problem solved.

Were the screws they sent longer? If they send replacement screws that are the same length it won't do much good...

I bought a screw cutter and a bunch of extra long screws. Now I can make custom length screws. If your plastic scales are nice and thick, you can insert stainless steel Helicoils and forget about trying to attach the screws to the liners

How do the helicoils work? Do they just thread the inside of the scale?

I had this problem on a 0550... I just sanded a small area with a dremel for the clip to fit into, and the screws went into the liner. Other then a break in the pattern, you don't notice it (and the clip covers it anyway).

Took about 5 minutes. Just make sure you wear a good mask if you do this... don't inhale scale dust. :barf:

A design flaw? Really? So having a threaded liner and not threaded G10 is a design flaw...got it. I swear, this kind of stuff makes me ashamed to be a lefty. I thought we were smart people, but apparently I'm in poor company.

Anyway, I asked Kershaw for longer screws, and they were sent pretty quickly. The thing you have to realize is that when you first thread a screw into the lefty carry side, the holes in the G10 or CF are just the size of the threads, and the screw will start to cut threads into that material. What results is by the time the screw gets to the threaded liner, it may be misaligned and will enter the threads in an odd way that could cause issues. Provided you have long enough screws (which are easily had by asking Kershaw/ZT for them), all it takes is some finagling to get the screws to just push through to the liner and enter the threaded liner straight on. Took me all of two minutes to put a lefty clip on my 0560CBCF.

I had something for this...

Definetly not a design flaw, 2 distinct possibilities. One as pointed out by stick above, and secondly if not perfectly aligned, when you put a screw into another hole it can effectively strip the bottom threads and will not bite. It will seem like they are too short but they are not.

Since Customer Service is sending you replacement screws, be patient and I'm sure you will be back in business in no time at all. If you still have trouble with fitment all you have to do is contact C.S. and they will take care of you. There are anomalies with everything. It will be ok.

The individual coils in the Helicoil are diamond shaped (in cross section) with a 60 degree angle on opposite sides. You install the Helicoil in the G-10 using a special drill, a special tap, and an installation tool. You get a kit for a certain size with some coils included. After that, all you have to buy is coils. If you google Helicoils, they show the tools and the parts.
I would install the coils in the G-10 only staying away from the liners.

whoooaaaa man.. way to much work for a pcoket clip on a knife. I'd just wait and see if the screws CS sends are long enough, If they arn't then I'd call and explain what' going and they will sort it out... jeeze---this isn't stripped threads on a cylinder head, no need to make it more complicated than it is.

In my case I did ask for longer screws, I was told they couldn't do that, only send replacements (which they promptly did, along with another clip). My screws dropped straight thru the scale and just barely contacted the liner. I had to make a pretty decent depression in the scale so that the end of the screws ended up flush with the liner.

No biggie IMO, though... I know that if I wanted, I could have sent the knife in, and they would have fixed it up. I like how it came out... fun to mod stuff anyways. I've had a number of Kershaws/ZTs with no issues... if this is the worse I get, I'll die a happy guy. :)

Wow, that escalated quickly

I have not only repaired many knives with stripped threads, but I have also added pocket clips to knive which had none to begin with.
