Zt 561 not flipping

Not sure where I should have posted this. I bought a zt 0561 from a dealer. When I was there it was not flipping, got it anyways thinking it just needed to break in. Well it's been about 2 months and still only deploys about halfway when using the flipper. Tried researching the issue but didn't see much on the zt being faulty. Just took it apart but everything seems fine. Thumb studs deploy the knife fast. Thoughts or ideas appreciated

It's likely your technique, if the blade opens quickly with the thumbstud.
First make sure you aren't applying pressure to the lock bar.
If that isn't the issue, I'll guess that the detent is fairly light. How much pressure on the flipper does it take to move the blade?
My 0560 has a fairly light detent; but I've never really had an issue with it (it was my first non-assisted flipper; so I wasn't spoiled by the ones with harder detents).

Perhaps an experienced ZT user could give a better/more accurate explanation, but sounds to me like either the pivot is too tight or the detent is too loose. If the pivot is too tight, the blade will have a lot of resistance to get past to open. If the detent is too loose, your finger won't have enough energy to kick open the blade. Not much you can do about the detent, but the pivot you could loosen.

I've going to move this to a different forum. Sorry you're having trouble with your 0561. I've got a few and they all flip very well. I'm sure someone here can help you get this one straightened out or can you always send it back for repair if there is actually something wrong with it.

That profile pic tho...

hhmoore's reply actually made the most sense, perhaps your finger is on the lock bar while you are trying to flip it. I don't have enough experience with frame locks since the only one I have is gathering dust 100 miles away, but that sounds pretty legit.

It doesn't have much of a detent. First nice knife I bought was a 0450 and felt like an idiot when I couldn't flip it open. Then realized I had pressure on the lock bar. I've tried every way to flip the 561 and full open. It's almost like it goes in slow motion to the halfway mark and stops. With wrist action it of course opens. The lock bar is extremely sticky. So overall I'm dissapointed with it. May upgrade my membership and let this thing fly for a stupid low price

Check out some videos on flipping Hinderer's. I can "light switch" mine; but it is better & more consistent when I flip it like a Hinderer.
Of course, since you bought it at a brick & mortar shop, you could bring it by for them to check it. If it's a problem with the knife, they can advise you on how to proceed...and, if it's your technique, they can probably get you started out in a few minutes.

It's not you it's the knife. I have a 0560 that doesn't flip worth a darn but my 0450 and 0452 fly out like rockets. Some knives just have lousy detents. My Lionsteel TRE doesn't flip very well either but I love that knife and have found that if I place the tip of my ring finger on the end of the blade as I'm flipping it, it provides enough resistance to flip very hard.

I'm thinking about selling my 0560 also, probably not today but somewhere down the line because it just frustrates me and I don't find it especially attractive.

The 0560 is an entirely different animal than the 0450 or 0452; different detent and different technique. (See my last post about flipping it like a Hinderer.)
It could be the knife - obviously, I can't say otherwise without putting it in my hand and flipping it - but I'd be surprised.

Does the blade fall back into the handle under it's own weight? It should.

If that is not the case, the pivot might be too tight.

If that IS the case, then the detent ball might be pressed too deep into the lockbar boss.

I would either take it back to the dealership OR send the knife in for warranty repair.

Or you could upgrade to a gold membership and sell it for a stupid low price and let someone else mail it in, your choice I guess.

Too bad you are having problems, the 560/561 series are great knives. Sounds like you have an early one that does not have the lockbar insert; any Ti frame lock that allows ti on steel contact can be sticky until it is work-hardened in.

Good Luck!

Just picked up the 0561 and it was pretty "stiff" for the first few days, applied some tuf glide and kept on working it while watching a movie she's nothing but butter smooth now. I'm pretty new to folders or any blades reaching the $200 price point but am thoroughly impressed with this one so far. Love the weight and the solidness of the build.

Send it in to ZT warranty service. I just used them to fix up a worn detent on a 801. I got it back in 10 days razor sharp with a whole new lock side handle free of charge

Welcome to the forum!

Your name may serve to have more meaning that you wanted if you start getting bitten by the ZT bug....but there are worse things you can do with your hobby money.

the most likely reason is a weak detent, assuming you flip it properly. If that is the reason, better send to KAI for fixing. Just curious, isit a gen 1 or 2?
