Okay please excuse the poor photos and rough state of the knife. As the title suggests this will be a WIP and this knife will barely be recognizable after its completion. Now to be clear I am not trying to insult KAI or Todd Rexford. I think the 801 is a fine knife all on its own. I simply enjoy modifying knives and every time I looked at the 801 I kept seeing something else that wasn't there. Due to a nasty drop I decided WTH and make that a reality and see where it takes me. The blade shape is final. It will however get a very fine hand rubbed sating finish. The insides of the handles are going to be engine turned and some sort of heat coloring will follow after that. This is just to show the preliminary shaping that was done to the blade and have a document of my progress. The blade so far was narrowed near the tip. The spine was crowned and a pseudo thumb ramp as well as a sharpening choil were added. Next up is going to be the satin finish and a mirror polished edge. Then I'm off to do the handles. Those will remain relatively stock except for the engine turning and heat coloring.

Almost spear like.. very cool.

thanks. i was trying for a harpoon style blade shape. Unfortunately the thumbramp area isnt 100% where I would like it to be but im working with limited real estate. I think the end result will be nice though.

That looks much better. KAI why is that not factory? Im loving that blade shape :) really nice job

D'oh!

When doing a finger choil mod... its recommended to put the finger choil near the edge, not the spine :P

Just kidding bro, it looks cool, i'll give yah that. Personally, I like the flow of the original better. However, im excited to see what this thing turns into. Subbed for justice.

I totally get that guys will enjoy the original over my mods. And even though I much enjoy pimping knives at many times I look at certain mods and cringe myself. This mod that i did takes me to the brink of what I will do to a perfectly good blade. And Im hoping once the final look is finalized that it will be easier on the eyes. The thing working against me right now is the ZT logo. I wanted to have it ghosted on there and faintly seen but even with it only slightly noticeable it emphasizes the rear cutout and you start envisioning the knife as it once was and you feel like your looking at something that isnt what it should be. Im hoping that after removing it entirely the flow will be working to my advantage. I also have a little more shaping to do near where the back cutout meets the handle and hopefully it will make look less like I took a bite out of it. One thing I do really like about it though is that rear cutaway helps facilitate one handed closing by providing a nook for your index finger.

I love it! I am a big fan of having a choil there, as my 0350 is my FAVORITE edc. Nice job man!

I like the lower choil. The top one I might elongate along the spine towards the point, then it would really resemble a 0350. Either way, as long as your happy is what counts. I only take the plunge when I'm not happy with the shape to begin with. In your case, it seems your happy with it so more power to you
