I was thinking about ordering some yellow ones from kryptoglow for my 550. Is the old scales hard to take off? Are they lock tighted on? Anybody had any trouble getting the factory off?

i never had any problems. they are a pretty tight fit, i usually wiggle wiggle wiggle wiggle yea, then they come loose. just be patient and careful

Use good tools to remove the torx fasteners

^ this. learn the hard way once and you will be looking for a nice set tomorrow. cheap ones will leave you with stripped screws, a stripped tool, or both. other than that, it is absolutely no problem. also, be aware that you may need two sets of torx drivers to hold the screws on the opposite side still if they start spinning.

Very well said. Quality tools are key and it doesn't hurt to have two sets.

agreed, this is correct.

there is also another trick to popping the Locktite on the pivot screw without having to deal with heat. fold a dish towel into a small square, big enough to rest the blade edge on. open the blade, and place it edge down on the towel on the corner of a table or workbench (you'll need the open space around it to work the blade and get to the pivot screw at the same time). applying a little pressure on the edge like you are trying to push cut thru the towel, loosen the pivot screw. the blade and handle will bind just enough to lock everything in place, and the pivot screw will pop loose. this trick has never failed me.
