How's the blade on the 550 compare to an 801 blade for edc...
wide range of say... occasionally cutting an apple or radiator hose to cardboard, packing bands etc.

Thanks for your input

Like most of the ZTs they are both thick blades. I would say that they should perform very similarly. Expect them to stand up to the punishment of the hoses, cardboard, and packing bands. As far as food goes, obviously you can cut it but its less convenient for fine slicing. I can do a side by side compare later on if interested.

The 0550's best asset is its handle. It's robust and hand filling, well suited to extended use. When I know I have a marathon ahead of me, that is the knife I prefer to carry. If I recall correctly, the 0801 has the same blade thickness as the 0550. I can't really see a situation in which it would perform better.

This is splitting hairs, though. I have an 0550, 0562, and 0566 and have used each of them a lot. They're all fine. I do find the 0566 to be the most frequently practical because of the thinner blade stock.

What jprime84 said. It'll cut all the items you mentioned just fine, but the thicker blade stock will end up splitting the apple rather than making nice, neat slices all the way through.

On second thought, between those two you are really picking from a spectacular thumb flipper in s35vn, and a lighting quick finger flipper in elmax (or s110v :) )

So I understand!
Actually, I have an 801 and it's everything it's talked about...
But after a gazillion years of carrying a thumb opener and muscle memory,
switching back and forth is driving me crazy,so just thinking about selling or trading towards a 550 or 630 .
The blade on the 801 is fine by me, just didn't want to really go much beefier.

I have had both and the blades are very similar in thickness and geometry. 0550s can be a pain to flip though, in my opinion. I was disappointed after buying one to learn that you have to grip it in an odd way so as not to compress the lockbar while opening, or else it is crazy difficult. The leverage on the thumbstuds is also a bit tricky. Could just be me, though. Lots of people say they flip smooth as silk. I don't think ZTs are much of a knife for food prep but I use them for that, anyway, and without any real difficulty.
