I've been looking at Zero Tolerance's model 0566 and I have a few questions that I hope the other forum members can answer.

1. Are their any different aftermarket scales and pocket clips that can replace the stock versions? Either from ZT direct or from a second party supplier.
2. How reliable is the assisted opening mechanism? I've never owned a knife with this kind of deployment system. Will I have to worry about any accidental openings in my pocket or at any other time?
3. Does Elmax blade steel have a propensity to develop rust?

Any help with and input with these questions is greatly appreciated.

The 0566's a great knife.

1. There are definitely people making scales, rival1314 on here, youtube, and Instagram makes them. I've seen some people making sculpted carbon fiber or titanium clips, you would have to look into it.
2. Not in my experience, they stay shut quite well.
3. Not at all, it's stainless. :)

1. I don't have any problems with the stock clips and scales, so I haven't looked into other options.

2. I have never had a Kershaw or Zero Tolerance Speedsafe knife open in my pocket.

3. No problems at all with any rust or corrosion issues whatsoever in my experience.

The 0566 is an awesome knife. ZT doesn't sell scales, but there are a number of custom scale makers here on the forums (eg. Rival). The 0566 stays closed well. The torsion bar actually helps hold it closed (in addition to the detent). I've never had my 0566 accidentally open. Elmax is very corrosion resistant, but as with all stainless steels (except H1), it's not rust-proof. I've never had any rust or corrosion on any of my Elmax blades, even after riding in my sweaty pocket for a dozen or more hours a day.

What they all say...I like my 566 and it has never opened in my pocket or anywhere else I did not want or expect it to open.
Cuscade.de makes awesome scales for nearly every knife.

It is my main EDC knife, and I have to say it is the hardest to open accidentally of any knifes I've carried. it's actually a bit tough to open using the flipper, at least until you work with it a bit. I haven't used it long enough to test for rust but I would highly recommend it.

Honestly, I will never buy an assisted knife ever again ever since I had a kershaw open in my pocket and nearly stab my side. I don't care how well people say they stay shut, things happen, and in my case, things did.

And realistically, how hard is it to just open the damn thing manually? I've even heard of police confiscating assisted knives because "they act like switchblades".

Just curious what makes you think a manual knife wont open too? If you are right hand carry go tip up and it wont matter what blade you are using.

I think you are the exception as I've carried my 566 every day for the past 3 months and it has never once accidentally opened. I can't even imagine how that would be possible?

Look up gator scales and lionwerks

2. How reliable is the assisted opening mechanism? I've never owned a knife with this kind of deployment system. Will I have to worry about any accidental openings in my pocket or at any other time? The only one I worried about was Kershaw boa, but that's an old knife. Every speedsafe knife I've carried since has not been a problem and most are very secure.

3. Does Elmax blade steel have a propensity to develop rust?

I wouldn't say it has a propensity to. I carry elmax everyday right next to the Atlantic ocean and I've not done anything special to the knife and it doesn't have a speck of corrosion on it.

Step 1: carry it carefully so it doesn't accidentally open. It's pretty hard for it to open unintentionally, but certain techniques of carry can reduce the risk even further.

Step 2: don't get searched by cops. Seriously, just don't do bad sh**. If you never end up on the bad side of a police officer, you'll never have to argue the legality of the knife he found while searching you

Step 3: know your laws. For instance, my area defines a switchblade as having a blade that is opened by any mechanism whatsoever that is in or attached to the handle that allows for the blade to be released automatically. The law specifically protects the use of assisted openers by saying it is legal if the knife both has a detent, and requires the operator to initiate the opening by pushing on the blade in some way. Kershaws with speedsafe have specifically been determined to fall under this category

I can almost guarantee you if you point the cop to this specific part of the law, you will have won argument. If he confiscates it even after you have informed him of the law, you should file a complaint. The guys probably just an asshole.
But the laws are different in different states, and many have laws that are vague enough to allow for the officer to confiscate it at his discretion. If this is the case, see step 2:p
