ZT0200: Blade coating, TDLC or bead blasted?

knifeworks has the 0200 with a bead blasted finish. I do prefer that look to the black coated blade....I think.

From a performance, longevity, durability, etc standpoint what, if any, is the difference between the two?

Which do/would you prefer and why?

BTW: Any and all input on the 0200 itself, along with gratuitous picture posting, is most definately welcome. :)

The DLC coating on the ZTs is very good. You'll pick up a few scratches over time, but it just makes it look like it's used. The coating is not necessary in any way (perhaps it slightly reduces friction), but if your prefer the looks, go for it.

And here are some gratuitous photos. This one has been reground by Tom Krein and re-handled in pink ivory by me:

I prefer the look of a blackened blade. The coating is outstanding and I would say one of the best out there. It sure beats all other competitors coatings including BM's benchkote which I've heard from many many users is really easy to scratch.

DLC has a rockwell number in the mid/upper 80's IIRC--it is ridiculously hard, and even when you see "scratches" on the coating, it just rubs off with soap and water (they're not scratches in the first place, just material "depositing itself onto the coating)

Phillip,

I had my ZT0200 reground by Tom when I saw your photo's. Thanks for the inspiration!!

The coating is mostly for looks, especially since it's on a already stainless blade, so if you prefer the satin finish look I'd say go for that, I've also heard a couple people say their action was a bit gritty on their 200 (which I would guess is due to a little coating getting into it) where as mine is as smooth or smoother than my KVT action ZT560.
