You may think it's there to make sure dirt collects in the pivot or to weaken that area in case milling out to fit the bearings in didn't do that already when the 3xx series was originally a heavy duty design... but in actuality it's just there for aesthetics.
A nice side effect though is you can clean and oil the detent track without taking it apart. That's legitimately a nice bonus.
