ZT0350 clicking when opening/closing

Hey Everyone,

I recieved a ZT0350 for a late Christmas present on 1/7/13. I have opened and closed it maybe 50 times, however in the last 20 or so times, its started making a loud clicking sound when opening or closing. I can actually feel it clicking/popping in the grips as well. While it still seems to be working as it should otherwise, this worries me as this is a main duty knife for LE work and needs to not fail on me.... The tip also appears to already have a nick it in but I can deal with that.

Thoughts?

Sounds like you've got a bad torsion bar, open the knife up and take it out to see if it helps. Then email ZT and ask for a new one, they will replace it free of charge.

...or you may decide you like it better unassisted, I know that is the case for many of us here.

Took it apart, cleaned it up, put a little grease back in the torsion bar cutout like it came with, no difference. Still making the popping sound. I tried it without the torsion bar but prefer having it and the assist function, as its carried on my duty belt as a backup defense knife and I like having the ability to open it with one finger on hand hand in case my other is not available. I'm not soo good at that without the assist.
Must say im really suprised, have had Kershaws for years with no issues and figured this would be a move up to a heavy duty knife for LE work, but this concerns me that the torsion bars would be breaking or bad after using it 50 times...
I guess I can send it back, already emailed ZT with the issue, but would hate to loose the blade as it was engraved for me.

Dont see any other way to contact them as the ZT page I can pull up is sales only, the regular ZT page doesn't load.

They make tens of thousands of torsion bars a year, there are bound to be a few bad apples in the bunch. Warranty will take care of you though, just let them know you'd prefer to keep the original blade if at all possible.

If you do send it in for warranty work, you can always leave a note with them to let them know there is sentimental value in the blade and to contact you if it does have to be replaced. From the sounds of it, though, it seems like a bad torsion bar. I remember one of the mods posted here that sometimes a bad one will slip through that will fail early on in the knife's life. Once it gets past that initial break-in period, though, they tend to be good for a very very long time.

It may not be the torsion bar, but the plate that holds it. I had a blem with the same problem. The plate that the torsion bar moves in had a milling mishap and had play at the end and the clicking was the torsion bar moving into that slot under pressure. Sounds confusing, but when you take it apart and look at it it may make sense to you. As always, send it into KAI and they will take care of it.

Capt, if it does break the knife will still work. Since it is engraved, I would suggest calling them up and asking for a couple being sent to you. You already said you had the knife apart, so I know you can do it! I bought a spankin new orange blur and it had a bad t-bar, they just sent me a few and I was back in business.
