Zt500 mudd

I'd assume they discontinued it because of slow sales. Too bad, as it is my favorite of the ZT line. Super solid and easy to use for lefties. The sealed pivot and lock really works, and is unique in the knife world.

is it?

i've been going back and forth on purchasing one. i like the design and the lock is intriguing, but it looks to be huge with a blade-handle ratio that is only fair.

they still appear to be readily available. guess i better decide soon.

That really sucks. ZT 0500 was one of those few folders that you really could beat up or take you anywhere without worry if it gets dirty. Its very easy to use even gloves on. I am glad I have minel.

I think Mr. Dobson nailed it.

I love mine and use it for work often. I wish it had M4 steel in the blade, but otherwise, a very very good work knife.

I picked one up a couple of months back and it went into the "Keep forever box" straight away. I am with the OP regarding the question as to why the MUDD would be discontinued???:confused::mad: The few times I used the MUDD I was at our hunting cottage in northern MI. My friends were more impressed with the ZT than any other folder I have ever brought up there!!! If you have the chance to pick one up, do it!!!

I never worry about blade-handle ratios. My hand is pretty wide anyway, so I appreciate the extra grip. After that, all I need to know is, is the blade big enough? The 0500 has a good big blade.

Dang I didn't know they discontinued it. I just passed on a NIB good deal today. Now I'm upset.

I had thought that the discontinuation was because they were either too expensive or too time consuming to produce?

I am not 100% certain on the discontinued story but I do remember reading it somewhere when I was researching the knife. It doesn't appear to be widely available in any event.

To be honest, the 0500 was a really challenging piece for R&D, Production, and Assembly. Although we felt the M.U.D.D. brought on innovation and was a unique and viable tool, unfortunately it became too taxing for the factory, thus it's exit from the line.

I would think the 0500 would be fairly difficult to find, as it's final production total over its lifetime was very limited.

The MUDD I had looked good, felt good, but the action was too slow for me. I just wasn't as pleased as I thought I would be with it. Now, however, I want another one.

Final production totals for the 0500 were as follows:

06/2007 through 07/2010 - 2,141 total units.

FWIW, there were only 229 M.U.D.D. knives shipped in 2010. So I'm unsure how they could be readily available.

The final production run (161 pieces) was released just a little while back, so the stock you see today is probably from that last batch.

Nice pick-up btw, especially for the price.

no, please tell me it's not true!
damn, I have hone and love it but won't be able to use it any more, have to get another one

sorry to hear that Thomas, it's the best knife Kershaw offered IMO, will be remembered here!

i hope mine lasts forever; it has been the best big folder i have ever used...

for those who discount it for it's "slow opening"; since when does that ever matter in the utility and performance of a knife...it opens, period.
