After a rather interesting miscalculation, i have come to wonder how brittle Zytel is?

I was swinging around my Sog Tech bowie blindly behind me for some reason, and i hit the handle on my large Cold steel zytel ti-lite. :foot:
Result: a rather noticeable chip in the handle.
The chip looked sort of like a cone...

How brittle are the 'super handle materials' like G10, carbon fiber, FRN, zytel, micarta?

Zytel is just a brand name of FRN. There are many varieties. Some are better than others.
Same goes for any of the other materials you mention.

Is it possible to post pictures? Zytel typically would not respond in the way you describe.

In my experience, Zytel (FRN) is relatively tough, however it gouges and scratches easily. I have never seen it chip, though.

Micarta, carbon fiber, and G10 [all phenolic or resin/epoxy based] chip-out when they encounter a hard surface. I've dropped carbon fiber several times on concrete and it definitely chips - but nothing too severe.

FRN dents or deforms when dropped on a hard surface. The handle on your SOG is Kraton - totally different stuff. Never handled it myself, but it should be more "rubbery" than FRN.

Post a picture if you can. That's weird that it would gouge like that.

I've never seen my FRN gouge or scratch, even when I've hit tar with it.
