“Do you need to borrow a saw?”

So what’s the answer to your “do you need a saw” question? Do you still need one?
No thanks! Both my neighbors have generously offered to let me borrow their chainsaw when they noticed me working away. There’s a perfectly functional Stihl in my garage. I find using axes to be satisfying and a good workout.

I don't trust chainsaws. They're dangerous on both ends and crafty in the middle. Too often I've had trouble with the chain slipping from its mount and just hanging there limp and impotently.
I’ve used chainsaws for various things, and though I’d consider myself a competent user, I don’t use them lightly.

I was felling a tree two days ago and the axe skipped out of the cut and missed my leg by about 6-12 inches. Happened so fast I didn’t even react until after it passed by my leg. They only thing I can say is that it was no accident my leg was where it was. Still… it’s a good reminder axes are serious business, too.

One word, Kevlar chaps.

OK two words.

Have you talked to your dealer about trying the blue bar oil? :p

I've had several near-misses with both axes and saws and every time I was always more worried about the axe hurting me. My chaps will stop my saw's chain, but my flesh or bone is the only thing that will stop my axe.

Axes are good for splitting wood, but chainsaws are a huge time-saver for felling trees and cutting into logs. Time is money, and unfortunately many people don’t have the luxury of spending all day chopping up a tree with an axe. Glad to see you’re enjoying the old-fashioned approach!
Time is not money and "many people" may not be the OP. Chopping with a good axe may be a "luxury to him.

Time is money, that’s indisputable. Now don’t make this a big issue just because you want to defend your friend. The title of his thread is “do you need a saw”… and yes, yes sometimes you do need a saw. He asked the question, don’t get mad when I answer it honestly.

Greatest video I have seen all year thanks Mr.Bob.Does the shape of his axe resemble the old style like jakepogg was forgeing without the ears?Wonder who made them and where they ended up.

You (Roy Batty) read the title and thought I was asking you (the forum) a question? The quotes were supposed to indicate that it was being asked of me… note the story of the neighbors asking.

The purpose of the thread was to bond with folks who prefer using an axe over a chainsaw.

I've got nothing against the axe . I still use my Estwing camp axe often .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

But for big jobs like cutting firewood or felling large trees , I much prefer a good chainsaw .

I cut most of our firewood for 30yrs or more . We used this almost exclusively to heat our whole house .

To use an axe for this would have been extremely grueling and very wasteful of both my time and energy and the trees .

Weekend warrior stuff for occasional mood fires , IMO . YMMV . ;)

Who is “Roy Batty”? Yes, you put it in your title. Why would you be upset about people saying saws still have their place when you literally mention the word in your thread title? Btw, nice “title edit”. Smooth move when you’re trying to win an argument by changing your title.

If you read my first post I noted that I edited the title to clear up the confusion- I understand how one could misread the title and misunderstand the purpose, and the words “to borrow” connect it better with the story, per the original intent. The quote from my second neighbor was literally, “do you need a saw? I have one you can borrow.”- the inspiration for the original title.

There’s no argument to be had here. You misunderstood the purpose of this to be arguing the virtues of a chainsaw, but instead it’s a story about forgoing conveniences of a chainsaw for the pleasure of swinging an axe.

I regret that I didn’t pick up on your confusion sooner, but I’m not going to drive the thread off topic any longer.

Some small axe work for sure here , but heavy work is being done with my Husqvarna .
interesting- is it typical that some uses an axe in conjunction with a chainsaw? Earlier I mentioned I could see axes as possibly more effective for limbing… was that what you were doing?

No need to get passive aggressive with me just because you failed to communicate clearly. Your title verbatim was “do you need a saw?”.. I think.. but since you changed it to try and save face with me, I’m not certain.

That could be interpreted as you asking if anyone wants your saw (because you no longer need it), or the way I took it.. which is asking if people think they still NEED saws, since apparently you think it is sacrilege to say chainsaws are useful in your thread.

You can “pick up on” all the confusion you like… but the failure to communicate clearly is on you.

Anything else?

Sounds more like someone who read the title and immediately jumped in with a response based on an assumption that should have been taken care of pretty handily by actually reading the post. Please, just stop.

You keep quoting me, I’m going to respond. That’s your intent, afterall.. to get me to respond when you quote me… right? Take your own advice.

Time is time and money is money. That is indisputable. The rest is your feeble opinion.
