🔪 Old Cold Steel Voyagers

The Voyagers are still one of the unsung heroes of the CS line up, but it’s true the old handles are much more svelte than the new ones. I carry a newer large Voyager on occasion and it gets the job done, just not much to look at. Well, the handle anyway, the blade has a nice profile. I must admit it does actually feel OK in-hand, so I guess that’s what matters most.

Old 5” Voyager next to my current edc.

I'm not a huge fan of CS giving me obvious places to hold the knife if I want to choke back and chop at a pig skull. I get it. If I hold farther back on the handle I can reach farther. But I don't need aggressive finger grooves to tell me that. 9 times out of 10 I am actually using the extra length of the handle to act as a counterweight to do fine work.

I do like the long thin handle on the old models.

I do think they work well on something like the 5 Max. Something that heavy, I can find some use. Honestly, gravity snapping it open holding it at the lower portion of the handle is actually the fastest way to open it. That blade is really chonky to slow roll.

Luckily I can tolerate them, they allow the 2-3 grips I use the most. Though I generally prefer FG’s no more aggressive than perhaps the Buck 110-level.
The current version is my most consistent carry for years .

For my hand size / shape , the ergonomic design is very functional . I did add a twist wire wave opener . Works great !

The sleeker original design is different enough to be reissued as a separate model , not to replace the current version .

The closest thing to the old Large Voyager that Cold Steel has in the current lineup is the Air Lite. Little shorter blade, thinner, G10 instead of FRN, and Triad lock instead of Lockback. Been carrying mine a lot.

It took a while after I first got mine for me to really appreciate it. Now I carry mine quite a bit. That s an underrated edc/work knife.
