Hi, I was wondering what effects heat treating 0-1 in a forge has on a knife. To be more clear, if I get it to non magnetic and soak it for say 5 minutes longer won't it overheat the steel? How does that effect the outcome. It's difficult for me to regulate an even heat. Does overheating basically ruin the outcome. Thank you- Ben

There are much wiser people than myself to answer this question, but I can tell you that O1 should be soaked for roughly 20 minutes at between 1475-1500. Time of soak will depend on temp. Any and all steel can be affected (ruined) by overheating.

If all I had was a forge, I'd use up all my O1 then get some 1084 or 1080, which is easier to HT, using a forge and magnet.

Jason is correct....O-1 isn't a good steel to forge HT.
It requires a HT oven to do it right. There are folks who do it in a forge, but the results won't easily be the best.

Send the O-1 blades to someone with an oven to do the HT. Get some 1084 for the forge.
