Looking at getting a Randall model 1 soon and was wondering if anyone knew the ups and downs of getting 01 carbon tool steel as opposed to stainless steel. Luckily i will only have to wait 4-6 weeks for this knife to come in!!! Thanks for the help fellas...Oh and im new to this forum

Just keep the blade oiled after use and you will be fine. :)

The only downside is that it rusts and stains more easily. It will stain if you use it on pretty much anything with liquid content and it will rust if you dont clean it properly after use. It will also not be a good idea to store it in its leather sheath. Other than that, O-1 is pretty much a better steel in every way than the alternative which Randall offers, which is 440B from what I remember.

Very tough steel. My cousin has a bhk bushcrafter in this steel, i was very suprised how well it preformed. Proper HT is important

What kind of oil do yall use on it? I have heard of people using CLP...It kind of sucks that i cant store it in its sheath. Here are my options:
# 1-7” standard leather handle, 01 carbon tool steel, $365.00. Model A sheath standard. Model C military sheath $ 15.00.

# 14-7 ½" black or green micarta 4 finger grip handle, tool steel, $385.00. Model C sheath included.

# 15-5 ½" black or green micarta 4 finger grip handle, tool steel, $375.00 with Model C sheath included.

# 16-7”SP#1 black or green micarta 4 finger grip handle, stainless steel blade, $405.00. Model A sheath standard. Model C military sheath $15.00.

CCFT Combat Companion Full-Tang (new model) stainless steel blade, black or green micarta handle, border patrol handle shape, $425.00 with Model C sheath included.

# 28-4-1/2" Woodsman, stainless steel blade, drop point hunter, full tang handle construction, black or green micarta border patrol handle, model B sheath $ 405.00.

Don't really need anything fancy..... ;)

I use PAM on my non stainless blades and it works great.

Yes that's the cooking spray..

And you get the added benifet of a butter taste when using it in the kitchen lol ;)

I like the model 1 for the historical significance and that its a badass knife. The woodsman seems more practical...Decisions!

it took me a long time before I got round to buying a knife in 01 (I like Stainless), but as others have said 01 is a great steel if Ht'd properly and looked after, wiped down after use with an oily rag (I use camelia oil) it should see you right for many years.

Yea i agree 01 steel is extremely strong i was kind of hoping for something a little less temperamental...I live on the coast in Texas and the humidity is like 90% most of the time...

I also live in a high humidity environment - sub-tropical and close to the sea. After trying everything on my carbon steel knives, including Tuff-Cloth, Ballistol, WD-40 and Break-Free, I found I have had best results with a lanolin based spray. Lanolin is the stuff that makes sheep wool water resistant. The reason it works so well is it doesn't evaporate. Every synthetic I tried just disappeared over time, but this stuff just stays put. The great thing is you can also use it to condition leather, vinyl and rubber. Even wood! Fluid Film is one US brand I know of that is lanolin based.

O1 is great stuff. Very slicy, takes and keeps a nice edge. It's also pretty rust prone. If you don't like oiling your blades after every use, you might not get it. Or else you can force a patina, which will help prevent rust from taking hold quite as quickly.

Thanks buffalo! That sounds like some amazing stuff! I was actually thinking about using ballistol but you just changed my mind lol I am kind of leaning toward the Model 28 because its not 7 inch and its stainless...Im def gunna look up Fluid Film

Another thing you could maybe consider is getting some cerakote. It's kinda pricey, but will protect your blades, stays on quite well, and is a very thin coating. Also, you can get it in clear.

Thanks crimson ill check it out! I would love to just be able to put some oil on it and put it in its sheath until i need to use it...im looking at using it for a multi purpose knife skinning deer outdoors just whatever i need it for...
