Need some help. If the quenching oil is too hot, will it cause 01 to warp. I heat treated the first blade with the oil at 125 and it was fine. When I went to quench the second blade it warped. I checked the oil temp and it was almost 155. Don't think I put it in at an angle or moved it side to side.
The second part of this question. If I anneal it and straighten it, will it effect the intergity of the blade if it is heat treated a second time.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Scott

I saw a post a couple of weeks ago that someone was using a plate quench on O1, so I tried it on some thin blades and it seems to work well. The blades were 3/32 so the plates removed the heat pretty quickly. After a minute or two I did a quick quench and then let cool to room temp. This really solved the warping issue I had with thinner blades.

Hi Patrick, did you happen to get any hardness tests on the quenched blades? I'm curious about the results.

The thread you are talking about was this thread.. Butcher_block (L.R.Harner) tried the method with success. I would suggest to plate quench O1 the best way to do is to add some pressured air to the quenching. Copper plates would do better...

It shouldn't hurt the O1 to simply reheat to quench temp soak, then wearing welding gloves and with nice clean anvil and smooth hammer ready. Remove the blade form oven, hit the oil for 7 seconds or so then straighten by hand with the gloves or give it a couple taps with the hammer and back into the oil.

Steel does not behave the same on the way up in temp as down. The metal will stay pliable at a cooler temp on the way down than it would be on the way up. Once the steel makes it past the "nose" the time factor it cools at is way longer. With O1 you have about 9 second to get it to 1000f and about 50 seconds to get it from 1000f to 600f and like 10 minutes from 600 to 400. You could also heat it to 1375f clamp it between some plates and get it straight then reheat soak and quench.

I don't much O1 and some others know way more that I and I may be wrong but, the chart shows those temps and times.
