ok, here is another one on my stupid o/a hardening questions: i just purchased some 01 1/4 inch thick 2 inch wide to attach to my platen, so can
i effectively torch harden this material? i was thinking just get it to non-magnetic and quench in 130 degree atf. any ideas?? thanks

I would send that off to a guy with an oven. Thats just my .02 cents. If you can get a second torch it may help you.

I think you would be OK as long as you get it heated evenly. I heat treat my O-1 in the forge and have had good luck with it. -chris

Depends on how big the peice is. I'd say if you have a rosebud tip and the peice isn't too long it would work out just fine. Heating it evenly is the key though, if you can't get it all up to uniform temp then your going to have trouble.

well its obviously 2 inches wide, it will be about 4 or 5 inches long and i do have a rose bud so i will give er a try!!!!!!

I think thats do able. I would hold it on edge with the torch underneath it. Keep the torch moving so you don't scale it too bad, and when you get it close to temp flip it and heat from the other edge. O1 doesn't have to get THAT hot, under 1500 deg. It will help if you're in low light also to see the steel coming up to color and how even it is.
