I need some advice;
o1 has gotton so expensive I was thinking about going to another steel.
What about 1080 ? How does it compare to 01 & how does it HT?
thanks Jerry
I don't believe most folks will be able to tell the difference between O1 and 1080 in a blind taste test, especially if you're not using tight temperature controls when heat treating the O1. If you're able to heat treat O-1 satisfactorily now, you'll have no complaints about 1080, it's a good steel.
The simple steels from 1075 to 1086 are great for beginners. Easy to forge, easy to grind and easy to heat treat. If you nail the edge geometry and heat treat then you will have a fantastic knife.
