I'll have you know that not only do I own an abacus, I know how to use it, too. Now, if you were to ask me where it is, I'd say "Out in the garage in one of the 85 boxes that still need to be emptied". Fences, fence lines, pastures, septic tanks, gutters, roofs, and never-ending weeds keep taking precedence.

I started out using punch cards with computers in 1975. My first personal computer was a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 1, bought in late 1980, IIRC. It came with an industry leading 4K of RAM, an audio cassette tape for program input OR data storage, a keyboard and a "green on green" 80 character wide monitor. You loaded the program from a cassette and then if you had output to store, you changed cassette tapes and saved your data. I later added a 12K Expansion Interface, for a whopping 16K RAM total. Even later, I also added a 5-1/4" floppy drive. It was single-sided/single-density and capable of storing 100K. Later, they had Single-Sided/Double-Density drives (180K). You could manually convert them to double-sided by using a hole punch and putting a hole in "just the right place". Then you could pull out the disk and turn it over and double your storage. The industry soon came out with a DS/FDD that could read both sides of the disks with out removing them. Hey, they couldn't be having us geeks by-pass buying more disks, now, could they. They also quit making the SS/SD and SS/DD disks, forcing us to upgrade to a DS/DD disk.
