I just cant seem to find a good source for 1084 steel here in Sweden. How ever 02 tool steel is pretty common. What I am after is a steel that is easy to heat treat and is not prone to warping in the process. So is 02 tool steel as a 1084 substitut for a rookie?

That should be OK. O1 is the steel in that class used in the USA most often but the O2 looks like a good choice.A 1070 or 1075 would work also. Let us know your progress .You should also read the 'stickies '
for heat treating !

Mete, based on composition, would O2 be easier to HT using a solid fuel forge than O1? My guess (not educated) is that the lower percent of alloying elements might allow you to get by without an extended austenitizing soak?

Peppen, you're right about that.
Stevo, There's nothing in the O2 that would require a long soak but neither does O1 . High amounts of W,V, and Mo are the ones that need long soaks.

So its a go on the 02 tool steel. I'm thinking about making classical Scandinavian stick tang knives 2,5mm wide 3" long. In a simple two brick forge. Using a magnet to check the temperature.

O-1 will harden without a soak and make a usable blade but 20 minutes at temp is very benifical.......

[normalizing will help reduce warp]

Peppen, a number of guys that I know in Europe use O2 for damascus in the same way that we use 1084 over here.
