What is safe lockup for a 0350? Mine is about 90% of the lock is on the blade, which seems high to me.

If when you whack the spine it doesn't unlock then it is safe. Fold a towel or something over the edge of a table so you don't damage the knife or the table and give the blade spine (dull side) a firm rap against the edge. Don't beat the hell out of it but do it a bit firmly using about the pressure you'd use to knock on a door.
This is part of the assembly process at the factory. 90% seems high if this is a brand new knife but doesn't sound like it would unlock and be unsafe. Unless it unlocks with a real light tap I would use it and not worry about it.

Yea, when I got it it was about 60%, so I was kinda worried when it moved.
It doesn't unlock, so I should be okay.

IMO 25% is perfect.I have passed on knives with more than that.

Just so you know, most people don't measure lockup by how much of the tang is on the blade.... It's mostly measured by how much of the blade tang is covered by the lock bar. So, if the lock bar has moved half way across the blade tang, the lockup would be at 50%. :)

Thanks! Now I feel stupid.:o

EDIT: I just realized that that could be seen as sarcastic. My thanks are sincere, but I still feel stupid!

No,I mean the lock bar only covering 25% of the blade tang.More than that is fine as far as function and safety but it is a piv of mine I can't get past on a liner or frame lock.I have picked up NIB knives that the lock went straight across to the other side and had blade play.Last one was an Emerson at a gun show,in defense of Emerson I do think the ones for sell there were fakes.
When ordering a liner or frame lock I will ask the dealer to send one with an early lock up.Kershawguy picked me out a nice early lock up on my 0550 I got from him.Newgraham also hand picked my Sebenza and digi camo Sere 2000 to get early lock up.

That would = the lock bar all the way on the blade on a liner lock right?

It would also depend on the thickness of the lock bar.A Spyderco Military could have all the liner on the tang of the blade and still not be but about 20 to 25% across the blade tang.A ZT would only have part of the lock bar on the blade tang to be at 25%.

That's why we don't use the lock bar as the yard stick for lockup, we use the blade tang. :)

I can't tell if that's what you were saying or not, haha.

Each knife is going to be a little unique on where exactly the lock lines up because each ZT is done by hand. Here's a picture of a 0350 we had sitting around our office. This one lines up right about 50%, though I have seen many that are significantly more or less that are all stable and work great. You can see in the pics posted by u812 that there can be a bit of a variance.

As the knife gets used more and more, the liner will wear on the blade a little and you may see it change over time. If you ever feel like yours isn't locking up right, give us a call!

*Thanks to our graphics team for taking a better picture than I could!
