0560's first blood

I can't tell you how many animals I've seen lost to snakebites right here. One buddies been bit too. Luckily he is a big healthy guy and got to care quick. And with three kids under the age of five, I kill rattlers without hesitation or question. I think between me and the neighbor, we were up to 6 last season. They just now came out this year. Neighbors lab pup has been hit already. Face swoll up nasty bad but the little fella made it a week so far. Looks like he will be fine.

I whole-heartedly agree. Better to dispatch the snake than a kid or another person. I've been around horses almost all my life and I've seen snake bites to the lip and the stomach...nasty crap has to happen if you want to save your horse.

Ya only if by the house or by people. They take years to reach maturity and without them the ecology crumbles, theyre a keystone species to control rodents. Protecting home is one thing, killing out of ingnorance or waste not so much. But im just a zoologist so thats just an intelectual approach.

If you have lots of rattlesnakes they are around for a reason, food. They normally feed on small to medium sized rodents. Therefore, if you have lots of rattlesnakes you have lots of rodents, or vice versa. They are there because of the abundance of food. Get rid of the rodents, get rid of the snakes. They go where the food supply is the greatest during the warmer months.

I'm sure there are because the closest neighbor is 5 miles away. It's just part of life in the country.

Yup, I know. I live in the country myself. We've had large snakes of many different species end up in our sheds, hen house, yard, porch, and garage.:D I keep rat poison put out in an effort to keep the rodents down. But, I've killed a few poisonous snakes over the years. They don't stand a chance if I see them anywhere near where my family frequents. The non poisonous snakes get a pass from me no matter what because they help keep the rodents down. I'll just move them out of the way, or take them to the edge of the woods by the house and let them go. I've even given poisonous snakes a pass a time or two if they were in a spot not posing any danger to my family. But, not often.

2 thumbs way up for killing that rattler! Heck to be honest id give you 2 thumbs up even if it was garden snake! They my biggest phobia! So im all for anyone killing them off! I guess cause when i was little kid i saw family member cut ones head off & that just screwed with me it squirming for hours without a head!!
