0770CF varient?

I saw the 0770cf video you did. Looks legit yet I am seeing poor performance from my 0770 comparing to my standard edc rotation. It is indeed better then my 801 though; which seems to drop an edge after 5 boxes. I just don't see my 0770 even holding up with some of my s30v's and cpm154's, maybe I got a bad one? That is why I am praying for the m390 version. They are just far more consistent from edge retention it seems after my first two Elmax ZT's performing sub-par I am not so intent on getting any more.

Have you tried re-profiling the edge and then sharpen the knife ensuring that you get a proper Apex?

Might want to try and resharpen it, raising a good bur getting rid of that factory edge....

I do that before using and or testing any knife.... But then I also reprofile them too...

Yeah.... I made that video shortly after I got done testing it and resharpening as an overview...

Jim knows his stuff. OP try doing what Jim suggests.

Jim really knows his steels and edges. He is a highly regarded tester and member here. OP try doing what Jim suggests.

I suggest re-profiling and sharpen paying attention to the apex.A jewelers loupe or magnifying glass works great so you can see whats going on.A sharpie will help you find your bevel when you re-profile.I always re-profile a new knife out the gate followed by a good sharpening and checking the edge(bur) with a loupe as I go.Razor sharp and proper edge retention every time.

I found the ELMAX in the 0770CF did as expected by my past experiences with it in a lot of different knives at varying hardness ranges from 58.5 to 62 RC.

Although most of the typical ZT knives are on the thick side so that might have something to do the performance levels when compared to other knives that some people are seeing.

The ZT 0770CF is much thinner and more in line with the Spyderco's and Benchmade's etc.

I think that the majority of issues people have had with Elmax is not the steel, but lack of sharpening technique or assuming the factory edge is always proper.I love the FFG Spyderco blades(wicked slicers) along with BM, but appreciate a thicker blade stock for so called hard use. A knife is meant to be a tool and not abused. The knives that are thicker behind the edge I would expect to perform differently than one with a thinner blade stock and different grind and or RC hardness.Variables..Thanks for the education sir and have a good night.....

I used the whicked edge up to a 1600 ceramic. I started with the 100 diamond with a sharpy. I am putting both at a 17 34 inclusive. I am absolutely a perfectionist with my edge's and spend hours upon hours on them if it is needed. I found the 0770 much better then the 0801 from my EDC tasks but still lacking compared to even my 943. Again I don't know if I got some bad samples or what but I just don't want to buy anther 200 dollar knife that I feel has a huge issue.

If you feel something is genuinely wrong with your blade, send it to KAI and have them test it out.

It could be a number of things really....

I would still say it may be sharpening that could have a lot to do with it...

801 seems to have a sweet spot that felt right on reassembly then smoothed out

And I'm a big fan of elmax, the 801 is thicker then I like to use at work but the sharpness of elmax makes up for the blade thickness

Hmm I may do that. I must say absolutely love the knife and its action but I don't like having to carry a secondary knife along with it. I just figured once I took it apart I was be boned. I just am still praying for a M390 variant, I just feel it is obviously a better steel and a much more consistent.

Well M390 will hold an edge longer than ELMAX...

You have a WE system, it's a pretty good system, but from how I have seen a lot of people use it and how they explain setting it up etc I think that some may not be removing enough metal from the edge...

It sharpens both sides of the edge at the same time in the way they designed it, well one sweep followed by another alternating sides etc.

Yeah it will get a knife sharp, I have no doubt about that.

I still think that a good burr needs to be raised going both directions, both sides of the edge, specifically the 1st time a blade is sharpened from the factory, would be hard to either see it or feel it using the WE the way they say too...

Sharpy doesn't matter, all that does is tell you that you are close.

Reality. They have some on eBay, and someone is already trying to sell one for $350 on BF. I got my pre-order in early this time.
