Got a 1/3 hp motor from a friend yesterday for free. It's a sturdy looking old motor, works fine still, and I was wondering if it would be good for anything? Could I turn it into a buffer cheaply?

Nice thing about an underpowered buffer is it's less likely to rip things out of your hand and throw them through you. The bad thing about an underpowered buffer is that that may instill a false sense of security.
If you don't mind taking longer to get a good polish I would say go ahead and use it. Be aware that buffing knives in inherently dangerous, and never tip your edge or point into the wheel.

Put a 3 or 4" loose buff on it and use it to buff the knife when it is completly finished. Dont use any compound on it. The last thing I do on a knife is wax it with Bre-wax and that would be great to shine it up.

Do not ssume that it wont pull the knife out of your hand or spin the knife while it is still in your hand and swing it around so it puts a nice slice in your left index finger just below your first knuckle.:D

Alrighty. Would one of the buffer assembly things out of Jantz work fine? What is the most cost effective way to do this? (I'm trying to stretch $3000 into a shop and my grinder/paragon have ate nearly all of it :o )

Stick a tapered shaft on the end of it and use jewelers buff wheels. To change wheels you just turn the shaft in the reverse direction, the wheel comes right off. the taper will probably run you 5-10 bucks
