Andy,

>>The 1/4" thick Badger Attack and Mean Streets are fully flat ground and EXCELLENT cutting and slicing tools.<<

This is from the thread in General Discussion, which was closed...

I have a Badger Attach (somewhere around here...

), and a Battle Mistress, and I sold my Steel Heart, and I have a Busse Basic #5.

I know the blades are flat ground..., but 1/4" thickness, in a blade 5" or less..., in my opinion is just too thick, unless you're buy a crowbar (and I don't buy my knives as pry bars.)

No matter the grind, thinner cuts better. Otherwise, scalpels would be 1/4"

I wouldn't buy a Mean Street, strictly because of it's thickness. Admittedly, that's my opinion..., but I imagine it does cost some sales. OTOH, Jerry seems to have enough (or too many) customers as it is

Thinner would be better on the smaller models, they would still have the necessary functional strength as the amount of torque you can exert on them is smaller.

The stock restriction may in fact simply be a monetary one. Since INFI is not a regular steel, Busse has to be getting it made. It might cost more to get the additional stock thicknesses. I know with the CPM's you can't just get whatever you want unless you buy enough from Crucible to make it worth thier time (which is a *lot*).

If you ordered 500 or so Mean Streets I would bet Jerry would be happy to give them to you in 3/16" . You could then even give me one, which you obviously wouldn't miss having 499 left.

Cliff,

Yeah, I know. I contacted one of my local makers, about having a thin, little scalpel shaped blade made. I wanted it in CPM420V, or in D2, or O1..., but he couldn't get those steels in that thickness, in the quantities he orders. So I eventually settled for ATS-34. Chipping shouldn't be a problem, anyway..., like I said, I don't buy my knives as pry bars.., and a little 2" blade won't exactly be a chopper, either

But I figure Busse *must* order enough steel to justify a couple of thicknesses...; 1/8" steel, for the smaller knives..., or at least 3/16"

I don't think I could afford 500 (custom) Mean Streets. Lem'me see..., 500 X $100 (per custom inch) X 9 (inches)..., nearly half a million dollars. I think that'd put me over my Visa limit!

The problem though is would the demand be enough to justify it? And of course when the demand for the regular line has a backorder is there any real reason (money wise) to expand the product line?

There is also the added complication of the warrenty. With an expanded market this would need some clarification and bound to cause some problems as you would have two clauses for the different knife classes.

I would like to see them though for similar reasons as you noted.

I think that'd put me over my Visa limit!

Just ask for a limit raise, I am sure if you said you needed to buy 500 combat blades they would consider it.

Maybe we could split it and just buy 250 of them each?

3/16th INFI will probably be available in about 9 months...your comments about availability and demand are close to the heart of the matter, but not the only reason for 1/4" only.

At this time, the minority seeks the smaller models in a thinner stock. Perhaps some heightened awareness and interest as a result of this forum will make that problem go away.

I just bought a new Game Warden in 0.170" INFI.
If I could have found it in 0.140" or 0.125", or even high-hollow ground, I would have preferred it.
Thicker is just fine in the woods, but try to slice an apple sometime with the thicker blade...

ThINFI is out there. GW in 0.14", Boney AD @ 0.125", Cultellus is 0.125", others that I can't remember right now...

I miss Cliff Stamp.

I have learned a lot reading his reviews, and I realize he gets criticized for his strong opinions - he seems to have plenty enough knowledge, skill, land/terrain/material around to actually do everything he says he does with his knives. I like his stuff.

Can't say I miss him, as he was long gone when I rolled up, and would love to have been around when he was active here.

Same. I don't think I was around yet either but sometimes I'll be internet surfing knife stuff and stumble across one of his posts and it's always a good read.
