1/4 " is overkill

Perhaps, but were I anticipating doing enough chopping to warrant carrying a tool having a blade profile simular to an axe, I'd carry an axe and be done with it.

Having had to traverse some of the woody undergrowth of southern ROK, I can say that in some cases a machete or an axe just won't do the job. My Chinese military "brush knife" (looks like an Al Mar Pathfinder with a cheap plastic grip, 1/4 or 5/16" blade) was a savior in the woods. My squad moved almost twice as fast as the others... though in retrospect, Getting to the ambush earlier wasn't much of an advantage.

The Axes and machetes of the other groups either took too long to swing-recover-swing(axe) or just couldn't take out a 3 cm woody vine with a good swing.

For a pocketknife or EDC? Use what you like. I love the weight of a well-crafted and balanced knife, and have shorted my own rations to carry the ones I liked most... While I got hungry, I never regretted the choice.

As Parreich noted, there are lots of types of brush and some are not cut very well by either machetes nor axes but require something inbetween. It is on this vegetation, which is not quite heavy enough to require an axe, but not light enough for a machete to handle easily that parangs, bolos and such come in. For those who do prefer the feel of an axe, there is this tool :

which is called the brush axe. It also has the tremendous benefit of cheap replacement blades. On the downside it has to be used as an axe and thus cannot cut on the full swing of the path arc as parangs and bolos etc. can, which is one of their main benefits. As well the Brush Axe is very restricted, it fares much worse than the Parang on lighter or heavier vegetation and of course doesn't have much knife-related abilities as it is a very restricted use tool.

What has a 5"long x 1" wide D-2 blade of 1/4" stock, a 5" natural Micarta handle with finger groove and balances perfectly at the first handle screw ? The hollow grind and edge bevel is perfection!! Give up :) Ah, come on, its a dead give away.

It's almost heaven; It's the new Wilderness Knife by Bod Dozier and I received mine on Monday last.

It is so new that it is not listed in the catalog yet; but if you hav e an interest try:

dozierknives.com or email Bob at...bobdozier@aol.com

Linda, Bob's wife ,has a picture and stat. sheet on this very pure form and function beauty. Or call 1-888-823-0023.

Did I say almost heaven? If you want or need a large knife, the Wilderness has it all right now, heaven can wait for me. No I'm not excited; you think I'm excited? It will receive its "madin voyage" this weekend.

A small comment on leuku, it was/is used by lapps for cutting wood/twigs, used on hay for special purpose. There isn't anything soft in the way in half open tundra, trees are mostly somewhat hard birch.

I always thought dozier used only 3-32ths?

at least in all my catalogues of his, but they are old.

I believe your are right. I adjusted my bifocals and took a second measurement with an accurate ruler. It definately is not 1/4". Thank you, sir.:)
