1,500 year old sword found in lake

I thought I read it was buried in clay. I'm sure that helped preserve it. Very cool, hopefully someone will find my lost Case in 1,500 years.

Cool story. Must have been in a low oxygen reducing environment for the thing to still be in as good a condition as it is.

I posted in the SWORD section because it's a SWORD ! :p
I've had a sword in my hand for many years ,more years than most of you have been around !
In recent years there was one found in Norway along a well travelled hiking path .Just sticking out of the ground. It only took one hiker who had his eyes open. Another was found by a goose hunter who stepped on it along the coast after winter storms kicked it up. That in Greenland or Iceland. Keep your eyes open and if it's marked METE it's MINE ! :D

I bet she found it magnet fishing. It's the only thing I can think of for a girl finding it in a lake. I doubt she was free diving.

That was here in Iceland. That was a lovely find. One of the best preserved swords that have been found here.

I just saw this article hit yahoo headlines now. Apparently she found it while skipping rocks at a lake.

So I assume it was washed up ashore and part of it visible.

I don't think a 8 year was free diving in the lake to find it on the bottom.

There was a drought causing the water level of the lake to drop and she was helping her father with their boat when she found it.
According to the Boston Globe it is a "85-centimeter (34-inch) sword in a holster made of wood and leather." Apparently 1,500 years they called scabbards holsters just as they did for the wood and leather holding their pistols.

Various groups in Europe dumped weapons in rivers as offerings , these are great finds .
Winter storms kick up lots of stuff, like weapons. Baltic countries have collected and sold amber since Roman times My fossilized shark teeth com from the Calvert Cliffs collected after winter storms !

I was wondering if this thing ever hacked into someone during battle!

I hear blood has the ability to make a great patina... oil/fats mixed with iron in small quantities, that could be it... but more likely cold oxygen starved water or clay silt
