OK all, I need some way of heat treating my knives. Don't wanna mess with Kao wool, so I thought I would make one of the one brick or two brick forges, with my propnae/mapp torch and use that to heat treat. The question is, how hot does the outside of these forges get? I was hoping to attach a magnet to the outside of the forge somehow to test magnetism. Now wondering if I can do this with epoxy, or if I should do it with part of wiring up the brick as Wayne showed in the book.

the outside of the brickes does get warm, so make sure you have it on something non-flammable, i have mine on 2 flat 8x16 cement blocks, and have my magnet wired down to one just off from the side of the little forge so i can check quickly before the metal cools. If you dont want to use the inswool (kaowool, or refractroy blanket), maybe you can look at this website and make your own refractroy:

if you want Satanite, check here:

Will try wiring it on then. not in any huge rush to do this. so far too lazy to walk across street to fireplace shop on my lunch break and see whta they have. :)

Guy I got torch from had a kao wool can setup, and with right angle on torch got nice swirl to heatwhole thing, but I think I have enough stuff around my place that is carcinogenic without adding kao wool. That's why i was hoping the one brick/two brick forge might work. oh well, will see. not a huge investment even if it doesn't. Gonna have to dig that book out again though.

Lay in a small supply of magnets (a couple or three). Testing will weaken them and they will not recover after cooling. I did not try the one brick. I poured a small forge from refactory cement instead (about 12W X 14D X 7 1/2H inches with a 2 inch high chamber). My little forge is much larger than a one brick and she gets very warm on her exteriors. I insulate the house wall from her with fire brick. I do not think you will be happy hanging tools upon your small forge.

You can use one of the $2 magnets on a stick and touch it to the blade, instead of vice versa.

you can still make a kaowool one and just cover the kaowool with Satanite or ITC-100 or the like to keep any fibers from getting airborne. I can use my little coffee can one and the metal shell does get warm but it never got hot enough to melt the folger label, i took it off because where i brazed them together with a brazing rod messed up the label, so i pulled it on off, the shell is still silver except where brazed.
