Does anyone here grind using a 1" contact wheel? If so, do you note any increase in control or precision? Thanks!

I do, but only for grinding in a swedge! the wheel does'nt sit far enough outside the bearings to really do any more with. even when grinding a swedge i have to use a 50 grit cubitron and switch to the trizact gators.., they're equally as thick so you can grind a little deeper :). if you want some dramatic hollows use atleast a 2" wheel. and sure, it will be easier to keep the wheel in place after you've created the groove then on a 10" wheel.

1" wide wheels ROCK! I do all my grinding on them. I buy them from BADER.

With a belt splitter (Midwest Knifemaker's Supply) you can buy 2" wide belts and split them. You can actually use-up (wear out) the entire surface of a 1" wide belt uniformly and there is cost savings to be had.

Control is great as you are able to focus on a smaller width when grinding.

I highly recommend them.

Thanks for the info! I may have to order a 1" contact wheel and give it a try. My main reason for considering a 1" wheel was control, but getting two belts for the price of one isn't bad either.
