I believe the extras are the same forum knife, they just have an "E" mark after the serial # (After the original 600 were made). It sounds like they made a few with a satin blade instead of the normal polished version as well. Someone who knows more can correct me if I'm mistaken. I just ordered an extra since I missed out earlier

GEC orders material to make X number of knives + some for wiggle room
Sometimes there's enough that you wind up with extras
The manufacturing process and working with natural materials means that sometimes things don't work out, so you get some blems or 'store' models
Sometimes there's enough to try something different, aka the satin models.
Sometimes there's enough that you run out of handle material and the acrylics get made to see what it looks like
