+1 HP vs. MAP arm

I'm finishing up a couple wood-working projects and am planning to sell them off to purchase a KMG... using one hobby to finance the start of another.

I've pretty much decided on at least a 2-hp VS setup w/ 8" wheel, small wheel attachment, couple of extra tooling arms.

What would be the best bang for the buck...
  1. Upgrading to 3-hp VS setup
  2. Pick up a MAP arm

What do you think?

MAP!! 2 horsepower should be more than enough for 99% of applications.

3 horsepower is really more of a luxury, where the MAP arm is just plain handy!

I have two KMG's side by side both are vari 2 HP, I once bog them down to see what would happen. So with a 10" wheel fresh 60 grit blaze, glass's face, mask and gloves flipped the switch and set it to full power and stepped into the wheel pushing with all my might. About 10 seconds later the machine's VFD tripped and shut down the motor wow man you should have seen the grind line:eek:

Might point you can bog it down but try to picture a person ready for war and completely out of control, anymore I rarely turn my grinder above 30 % for grinding hollows for edge work I will go into the 80% at times. As far as the small wheel be careful of turning the grinder up to high and that small wheel attachment will blow up in your face.

So 1.5 and 2 hp motors work just fine IMHO down the road I would like to have more power but for know I am happy.

Now about the MAP ARM pure genius I tell you, I have 2 of those as well and always make the comment when grinding how glad I am to have them. I can do some things with the MAP arms that you can not with a conventional rest.

Now the MAP arms use for each maker is as diffenerent as the knives we make, so I cannot help you there but if you like it you will find more and more cool things you can do with it.

So 3 horses in which you will only really ride on maybe 1 or the MAP arm that you can use in all phase's of your knife building?

"Thats what I think":D

I have been building up tools in my {teeny, tiny 9'x21'} shop for the past couple of years. I have yet to earn any money from the shop... just enough to pay for the next tool purchase (and that may even be a bit of an exaggeration). I started the shop to make martial arts (wing chun-type) wooden dummies.
I now have a table-saw, {wood} band-saw, drill-press, {wood} lathe, planer, router, and various other powered hand tools. I have two dummies to sell which should cover the KMG. I may sell one of my personal dummies as well so I can afford a heat-treating kiln. Future purchases may also include a mini-mill and a porta-band as money becomes available.

My shop is like a tokomak reactor... consumes more than I get out of it... but still really cool.

Not to hijack this thread, but thanks Michael! Now I remember your post of that incredible invention that everyone including me must have. I've PMed you. ;)

Good choice Dave. I opted for the 2hp KMG with the 3 step pulleys instead of the VFD. I used the money I would have spent, on the MAP arm.
No regrets at all. Michael is a great guy to work with as well.
Best of luck.

You'll like the MAP arm! i'm using the same grinding set-up and recently aquired a map arm from Michael.very cool tool (imo). no limitsjust use your imagination :)

The MAP arm is an awesome addition to the KMG. I have one on my 1.5 HP KMG. I've got another one in the box waiting to go on my 2HP KMG. IMHO, 3HP is not needed.
