1 week backpacking alone....................

I guess that is what I am posting about. I thought it was cutting back to just have 1 7" instead of a 9" camp knife.

also though I give up alot, like sleeping bag, tents stuff like that.
I also am researching using esbit fuel tabs instead of bringing liquid fuel in a cannister.

cutting out all those things is alot of wieght.

I guess it comes down to what makes one individual comfortable in the woods to another individual.

except for that trip with the AK, my pack is usually lighter and smaller than all my friends. I only took a 2700 cube pack for 3 days. I am gonna see if I can get all my food needs for a week in it. it will be tight.

thanks for your opinions ya never know what someone will say to make you think in a different way

Thanks Chrisaloia, glad that I could add to the thread.

You know, I have a close friend who insists on removing all the labels from his clothing to save weight. I keep telling him to remove his "beer gut" instead....haha

here's a link for ya: http://www.backpackinglight.com/

Cheers,

Sounds like you don't mind carrrying a bunch of extra weight - that's great that you can do that. Since weight doesn't really seem to be an issue, how about carrying a satelite phone or a Park's Service radio.....just in case.....you know, in case you have to rescue somebody or you break your leg on an alpine ridge line (no trees)...or <insert catastrophy of choice>

Somehow I fell that message was for me...
When walking in Scotland, I did feel that taking a Cold Steel Tanto in my rucksack was a bit of exageration :o but when in the rainforests of Brazil that is not!! Unfortunately a satelite phone is a bit too expensive, at least for me, and radios do not work even in the most popular treks due to lack of proper infra-structure. Besides, rescue teams r rare and sparce, so basically, u r on your own. I do consider carrying a knife a good safety measure and wolud not leave one behind just due to its weight. ;)
Obviouslly when walking in Scotland again I might reconsider what I will take with me :D

I think your sun tzu quote is great I wish we(USA) would follow that one. I am not too pleased with our stategy thus far. it seems too obvious and exactly what bin laden was expecting. oh well!

I'm just praying that we, and binlying, don't know all that's really happening..... :(

yeah rok,

I am hoping we actually have a strategy and it is not the POS one we are seeing. Maybe that is a smoke screen for the real stuff we won't see.

cause what we are seeing isn't effective in the least. everytime we go to war we fight the wrong fight, the obviuos fight, then somewhere along the lines someone wakes up and says we have to fight unconventionally. it happened in the revolutionary, WWII and vietnam.

I wish for once we acted like a good strategist from the get go.

Personally, I think that if you've already got a leatherman and maybe a good SAK with a saw you've pretty much already got what you need in terms of knives, and would probably benefit more from having the hatchet than the big fixed blade. I know that's what I thought the summer I worked doing primitive trail construction in N.H.
Best of Luck.
