I was looking at those 1" wide x 30 ft long sanding rolls and thinking since they are cheap, ($5 or so) would it be easy to make them into 1" x 30" belts? if so, it seems pretty cost effective. Has anyone tried this? Wondering what type of glue to use, it would have to be flexible and strong. And could also use some strong fiber reinforced tape like the factory ones.

Not really going to work. Belts are spliced very precisely with tapered edges and special industrial adhesives.

My guess is that you would not be able to skive the edges enough to get them to join without creating a significant "bump" in your belt. It's a good idea, but not really practical to do.

ask bladsmth. he would be able to tell you the adhesive used to join grinding belts together. the stuff is rather expensive.

Shop rolls are usually paper backed for hand sanding. Sanding belts are pretty much always fiber backed and are a heck of a lot stronger than paper backed hand rolls. That explains the price difference.
