Last Monday was the ONE-year anniversary of my becoming a BF member; Friday I passed TWO thousand posts. To celebrate these milestones, I'll host this THREE-day giveaway. I'll randomly select winners from the qualified entrants first thing Wednesday morning, in the hopes that I can gather addresses and ship the prizes before I leave town for vacation next Saturday. There are FOUR knives up for grabs, as pictured below. Any BF member with at least 50 posts in the traditional subform is eligible to enter.

I always enjoy the GAWs "with strings attached", in which entrants have to provide some information about themselves in order to "play"; I think that helps us get to know each other a little better and builds community here on "The Porch". I'm requiring that entrants briefly describe their knife-sharpening equipment/methods and pass along their favorite sharpening tip in order to be eligible.

The knives in the GAW are:
1) a Rough Rider 3.5" lockback hunter with clip point blade and "Midnight Swirl" acrylic covers,
2) a Rough Rider 3.75" copperhead with clip and skinner blades and gunstock checked brown bone covers,
3) a 3.5" Victorinox Camper with a plethora of tools, including a saw, and
4) a Rough Rider 4.125" one-arm trapper with clip and "razor" blades.
I'll give away at least 2 of these knives; if there are at least 60 entrants I'll pick 3 winners, and if there at least 80 entrants, I'll award all 4 knives to randomly-selected winners.

So, to post a "legal entry", you must:
1) List the knife or knives in which you're interested, in order of preference, (so that, for example, if your entry is selected but your first choice knife has already been awarded, I can still send you your second choice),
2) Briefly describe your knife-sharpening equipment/methods and a sharpening tip that was useful to you.

Amateur photos of the knives follow. Good luck everyone, and thanks for playing!

Amazing display of generosity 5k! I love the twist on this one. I sharpen professionally as part of my hobbyist bladesmithing business and primarily use 1000 and 6000 grit japanese water stones followed by home-made strops. My pocket knife kit is an eze-lap diamond hone and a square cut out piece of 18000 grit razor hone. Means I can carry them everywhere. My advice would be exactly that, always have a small hone set you can carry with you, you never know when you'll need to sharpen!

I'm in!

1. One armed trapper
2. Copperhead trapper
3. Vic Camper
4. Lock back hunter

Thanks mate, legendary!

Hard to believe it's only been a year GT, you seem to have been around forever - in a GOOD way! :D You've been a great addition to the The Porch, and I very much enjoy your posts, and the interesting and different knives you bring to the EDC thread. Congratulations on the milestone, and thanks for the kind and thoughtful giveaway

Not an entry if you don't mind, but good luck to everyone

Not an entry to give chances to others but great on you GT for this giveaway and the amount of posts you've accumulated in such a short time

My method of sharpening varies from a home base setup of Wicked edge Pro system with stones from 100-2000, japanese waterstones.
I have two pocket stones from my father that were used for surgical instruments. Fine and ultra fine, a spyderco sharpmaker and 400-2000 grit sandpaper for convex edge touch ups.
A tip..be patient, wary and attentive to the amount of metal you're removing. Several swipes and you could remove a couple years off a knife. Take it careful and slow and I cannot recommend above all a strop. I love my four sided stropman strop for that final edge.

Hang On -2000 posts in one year!!! awesome. respeck but as SWMBO'd would say ,
"are you on knifeforum again? get a life.":D:thumbup:
Yeah right woddevva.
This is a super bulk mega giveaway if ever I saw one .CHOOIICE.
I'm in
order of preference is as you have shown the pics but with the amendment that the SAK is at #4 and the one armed bandit takes up #3.
With regard to sharpening I have a Lansky system and for kitchen knives I got a RiuXin Pro (:p) which works just fine.
A handy tip which I picked up off a drunk Canadian on youtube (is there any other kind?) is when using a stone placed on the kitchen surface -put a damp folded teatowel underneath it and it won't slide around. It works.
Cheers

I'm in, thanks. My order of preference is the order you listed 'em. Congrats on the milestones, BTW.

I sharpen with a variety of stones, maybe starting with a diamond stone if I really need to remove some steel, getting progressively finer until I give the blade a stroke or two with a ceramic rod. Finish with a piece of leather impregnated with metal polish, for a shaving edge.

Probably the most useful tip for touching up a blade is stropping on the edge of a car window in the field, etc.

Not an entry. Just wanted to say kudos for the awesome giveaway and congrats on the milestones. You are doubly as active as I am!!

As or sharpening, I have a couple of DMT Diafolds that cover a range of course, fine, extra-fine, and extra-extra-fine. I had been using those for all of my sharpening needs until a couple months ago when I started playing around with convexing my edges. I have built myself a little block that consists of a chunk of 2x4 with a piece of thick mousepad glued to the top and bottom with 1,000 grit wet/dry paper stapled on one side and 2,000 grit on the other. This has worked out really well for me, and if I need something more aggressive I use 600 grit wet/dry on my mousepad for my computer. I ordered a DMT 6" extra coarse benchstone, but it came with some chips in it so it's going back. After using it over this weekend to sharpen a set of kitchen knives for somebody and liking it I think I'm just going to order a set of 8" DMT Diasharps as I get the chance and keep my Diafolds for out and about work. The larger surface makes sharpening much easier, and the DMTs hold up well enough that I think the investment is worth it.

Now, it's time for me to call shenanigans. You asked how we sharpen, but never divulged that information yourself. So, how does GT5K sharpen his knives?

I'm in, thanks.

1. Vic Camper
2. One armed trapper
3. Copperhead trapper
4. Lock back hunter

Freehand with DMT stones. Tip - diamond stones.

I'm in.

I use everything from the bottom of cups, Arkansas stones, a Spyderco doublestuff, an Edge Pro, and strop.

I'd say don't go too hard and be patient.

Thanks!

GT....congrats on the 1 yr anniv. and surpassing 2000, with onward to 3000. I'm in

preferences: 3 (a SAK with a saw and a wine opener, perfect), 1,2,4

I have a spyderco sharpmaker that I am still learning to use well. a home made leather strop with green stropping stuff. I have an unopened Smiths 2 stone sharpening kit with a medium 5" stone and a 4"fine Arkansas stone, in my camp bag...but I always sharpen before heading out ...so remains unopened.

Every time I take care of a drunk in the ED, the standard answer to how many beers have you had, has always been "two beers" and some these folks can barely walk...so my advise is to never to sharpen knives after "two beers".

I'm in please, and thanks for the giveaway.

Hunter > Camper > copperhead > trapper

My primary sharpening epiphany was the purchase of a Edge Pro Apex. Its spendy, and it is also a form of cheating, but it produces a great edge. I'm one of the 3 people on Bladeforums who can not produce an edge on a Sharpmaker, though I am adequate with stones. But yeah, I am happy to cheat in order to get a good edge.

1 year, 2 thousand post, 3-day, 4-knife, 5K Qs GAW

^^^^^ I see what you did there. ;)

Not a entry, but I use the following.....

1) DMT D8C 8-Inch Dia-Sharp Continuous Diamond (Coarse)
2) Spyderco Profile Set 701MF
3) Spyderco Bench Stone 3x8 (Ultra Fine) 306UF
4) Knives Plus Strop Block

Secret: Practice, practice, practice, practice, practice. :)

Not an entry, but congratulations on your milestone. You've established yourself as one of the "good guys"

I'm in. This is a wonderful GAW that you are having. My order would be 2, 4, 1, 3

I started sharpening with sandpaper and moved to a stone Lansky. I have now graduated to the diamond Lansky. My best tip is a strop for the final step.

Sak, lockback hunter, copperhead.
i use a variety of sharpening tools and methods.
for really dull kitchen knives like french chef knife i use a 1X42 belt sander to make the initial bevel. for carbon steel pocket knives(slip-joints) i use Arkansas Washita stones with water.
to sharpen modern stainless like 189 i use diamond stones with water.
very rarely if ever do i use oil on stones.

Cool giveaway! I use a double sided Smith diamond sharpener for when I need to work serious problems out of a blade, but normally I just use an Arkansas stone that's been in the family for years and strop with a scrap of leather I stapled to a board. When I made it I had loaded it with a polishing compound, but that's long gone now, it still works fine. I sharpen axes and such with a 1x30 sander and a lansky puck, along with files. My favorite tip? If your knife gets dull, strop it on some cardboard, it seems like trash cardboard can be found anywhere, so often it is the perfect tool for touching up a blade. It works great too!

My preference order would be:

1. One armed trapper
2. Copperhead
3. SAK
4. Lock back folder

This is very generous! I'm in! I also hope to do a GAW of my own!

I use the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Originally I did not order any extra rods. Shortly after I purchase the unit I read online about how important the extra fine rods are. I purchased them and my tip is......by the fucking extra fine AND the diamond stones.

I am happy to have any of those knives!

Hi buddy, that's a pretty awesome setup you got there! Actually, I've heard it's one of the best . Read over the rules a little bit more (for clarification and eligibility). Not being rude at all, just helping out a fellow knife enthusiasts :).

I hope to see you around more..... welcome, and have fun!

(P.S.) No profanity or anything, as this is a public forum and we wouldn't want any little ones seeing the vulgar language ;). So around these parts it's more of a "gosh darn it, what in the heck" type of banter. Though, there is a place for such activities available to paying members.

Very generous of you.
Not an entry, I use Smith's stones, I forget who's stones on rods, a pull through (the pull through works great for getting rid of the burrs and wire edges and even up the grinds a little on the Cold Steel machetes ... almost as fast as a grinder and no heat concerns) and a ceramic rod and an old leather belt for finishing.
I use oil on the stones.

GT its hard to believe it's only been a year since you and I joined! I just always assumed you to have been around longer! :D I very much enjoy your posts, and the interesting and different knives you bring to the EDC thread. Congratulations on the milestone, and thanks for the kind and thoughtful giveaway

Not an entry if you don't mind, but good luck to everyone
