I been hunting high and low all over Thailand to find myself 10" and 12" wheel which i can convert into grinder wheel .

example i had look at heavy industry wheel . with P.U coating .

most of the problem i face is that the wheel is only 51mm and the surface is not flat . with both edge bevel . -

and also i am not sure if such wheel is round .

i am considering making my own wheel . in the 10- 12" range .

any suggestion on making your own wheel an how to do it so i can cut down cost or make a good wheel .

or any parts from cars or industry parts which can be use to convert .

i had been looking at diamond grinding wheel but their usally only 31.5mm across making it too small .

.

A cheap and easy fix is to make a curved platen like this one, it's the same as grinding on a 14" wheel.

here's a 24" (23.5" actual) wheel I made out of a half sheet of 1/2" hardwood plywood, cut into 4 - 24" squares. I glued and screwed the 4 square boards together, found center and drilled a pilot hole, used a 12" long string and struck the arc. Cut out the arc on a bandsaw, you can use an old truck axle for the bearing and hub to bolt the wheel to.source your bearings and motor and stand and you can have as big a wheel as you want. I use 2" shop roll abrasive held on with feathering disk adhesive and a taper pin you can see in the pic. Once running you use a wood lathe gouge to run it into true. I use a 3/4 hp 1725 rpm motor reduced 5:1 to produce 355 wheel rpm = roughly 2200 surface feet per minute

wow , great ideas ,

i have the same idea of cutting a 1/4 or 1/8 arch of a round steel and made it into a attachment , but what worry me is the back of the sand belt aginst the metal attachment , while i do like the idea i am pondering if it safe ,

i am also looking at old diamond grinder wheel as well as lorry drum brake drum . to do some mod and make it into a wheel .

i also like the wood idea , but some how deep in my mind . a metal combo is what i am looking for .

i was just thinking today if i stable wood with resin or polyurethane . and then grind it into a wheel would it be better ? just an idea .

Using a curved metal platen is just the same as using a flat one, they both get a little warm when you are grinding.
