10 inch integral mosaic gyoto

Thank you all.

Gorgeous work!
I love that pattern.
Question: did you forge the blade out of a bar the size of the bolster? I love the look of the compressed pattern in the bolster next to the large pattern on the blade.

Manuel, the piece of steel that I started with was roughly 1 1/2inches tall by 1 1/4 wide and 2 1/4 long. I rolled it length wise to an inch thick then forged the bolster area down to an inch thick by a half inch tall then pulled a tang out of the back half of the bolster area. I then upset into the bolster and forged the thickness down untill the pattern looked right. then started forging the blade drawing the length out then drew the width of the blade until again the pattern looked right. I then finished drawing out the tang cleaned the bolster and heal up. At this point the blade was about .215 at the spine above the heal. I reduced it by grinding so as not to distort the symetry of the pattern.

Hope this is clear.

That rocks, Bill! All the lines working together, colors and textures.

Sorry we're going to miss you in Visalia this year, maybe next year?

Dan

Very clear, thanks a lot.
The result was perfect.

Thanks everyone for looking.

Dan I am really bummed to be missing out on the Hammer in.

One other thing that I think that I forgot to mention is this is made from three fiths of a small loaf of Damascus. the pattern is a very low layer count similar to the blossum and lace pattern that Gary House is famous for.

Thanks Gary.

Fantastic Work Bill!

I think one of the nicest pieces I have seen by you to date.

I have been dreaming of making some really tight Damascus for forge some integrals out of!

You will be missed at the California Hammer-In this year!

Congratulations on a truly wonderful Gyuto:)
