10 Seconds of Use, 30 minutes of Repair! Ack!

I gave by buddy a Kershaw Blur for his Bday. The first use on a hike he chipped an ungodly amount of the blade trimming a 1/2" branch! I told him to send it to Kershaw. He said "Whatever. It's just a knife. That'll happen!" He knew it was an $80 knife. So now he just sees all knives as temporary and won't spend over $50. I will say he uses his knives for anything and everything though.

Thats pretty impressive or something was off in production. Blurs are pretty stout I beat the hell out of mine for a year and it just laughed. The only non Emerson I had that took suck a beating.

Which leads into: Emersons, the knife for those of us who's first reaction to meeting a lock set in need of fitting on a door is to use their pocket knife. Turns out A100s make a darn good chisel for a saber ground blade.

If it was a plastic paint can why didn't you just cut it open? I carry a vic spirit at work everyday its real nice, the main flat screwdriver is twice as thick as everything else(for prying)

I can't really describe it, but the lid was much smaller and thicker than what you'd think of when you think of normal spray pain can tops. It fir very snugly over a small rolled metal edge on the top of the can. Cutting it wasn't really an option. It's all good though. I got it nice and sharp with minimal metal removal and I'm looking forward to my new multi-tool!

those situations are the reasons i much rather pocket a small tinker SAKs than carry ONLY a single blade fancy folder.

but usually i carry more than 1 knife hehehe..

my vic huntsman lite is my fav sak. for everything it doesnt cover, i have a wave, surge or swisschamp. But i did a lot of writing down tools i needed and searched for a tool that had it all. Only thing it doesnt have is a chisel and magnifying glass. Oh well!

I've bumped up against this issue as well.

I prefer to discretely carry a light but strong one-hand-operated knife within easy reach that doesn't take up excessive pocket-space, i.e. pocket-clip, but I also have need of a good pry-bar, bottle-opener, screw-drivers, etc.
My Leatherman Charge is a bit bulky and the tools aren't all as easily accessed as carrying just a knife (e.g. BM 585s) and the PocketToolX Piranha. PocketToolX was bought by Leatherman in June 2012 so it's now produced by them, not sure what steel they are using but mine is an older model billed as stonewashed 154CM. It's a pretty handy multitool with no moving parts. Lots of other options out there though, from fancy Atwoods to Gerber Artifact & Shard to Schrade Key Chain Pry-tool as well as the basic Pry-Baby family.

If I had to pry the cap off wouldnt you just use the spine of the blade instead of the edge?

Would that still work?

No, the spine was too thick, even being a FFG. There was a very small space between the can and the lid and because the lid was so small, I couldn't get a grip on it to move it at all.

Ideally a pair of channel locks would have worked, but I don't normally EDC those. ;)
