Hello all
I need suggestions on what first knife to give my son.
He is 10 years old. Very responsible.
He would only carry it on hikes and camping with me and it's main purpose is for whittling, minor bushcrafting.
Thanks in advance for your input

What about a bench made griptillian? You can get it in a sheepsfoot blade style. Very easy to handle and your fingers aren't near the blade when you close it. The mini or full size should be a good fit.

Delica would be an amazing first knife. I had a few hand-me-down traditionals, but my first new knife was a Minibuck, though I preferred stealing the Cutco 1886 lockback from the kitchen drawer.

Case sodbuster. Teach him not to rely on a lock for safety. Same principle as in gun safety, don't teach them to rely on the safety. It will give him an inherent respect for the blade.

There are several that come to mind. Something in the Victorinox line would be good and if you wanted a bigger version maybe a Victorinox Rangergrip 78. Spyderco Delica, Cold Steel Broken Skull if you want a big but very lite weight knife and it or the Spyderco Delica come in different color handles in case you drop it or lose it you may be able to find it. Any of the name brands all have some nice folders. Good Luck. Kevin 👍

Couldn't have said it better myself. My suggestion would be a three blade stockman. The two blade canoe style and the Texas Toothpick large were my favorites as a child.

For the tasks you say I'd vote for a Mora Companion. That's what I keep in my hiking/camping pack. Good for whittling and minor bush crafting, inexpensive, comes in a variety of colors.

The knife I had around that age was a CRKT Lake 111. I also had a Kershaw Little Lockback. Great knives for kids.

AG Russell bird and trout
that was the first knife ever get my son.
it's a quality product and it's got a safety sheath.
the sheath has a push button to take the knife out of the sheath that's why I like it so much.
and he liked it a lot. AUS8 steel you can't go wrong.
but as the first knife the list is a mile long.

My older son is ten. I gave him his first knife when he was eight. It was a victorinox deluxe tinker. He loved it but would still often ask to use my opinel. I asked him why. Because it has a lock, which made him more comfortable. I gave him the opinel. When he was nine I gave him an alox pioneer. He carries that more than the tinker because it's smaller. This year I gave him a spyderco delica. It's been six months and he still gets the delica out a few nights a week to admire it and ask when our next hike is. Same rule as you - hikes and camping.
I guess my point is - something with a lock.

My first was a SAK Huntsman. Like AdamFuzzyballs said, that knife taught me how to not let knives close on my fingers. My second was a Buck fixed blade, something on the smaller end; I can't recall the model. Those were both good firsts for me.

My kiddo's first is likely to be a Case Peanut or some flavor of SAK.

A place where Knives Ship Free (not sure if they are a partner/sponsor here) runs a great deal on knives for kids. They sell a good buck folder for about half off but it is only for kids, and they would like a picture of the kid getting the knife. I think they will also engrave the kids name on it, but don't hold me to it. Used to be free, but they couldn't afford it they were giving so many.

My first knife was a collection of cheap junk knives with hardly any edge. I started loving knives very young.

When I got older, I got nicer knives. Lock backs, fixed blades, and slip joints.

I carried the slip joints because that is what my father carried. Case trappers, yellow handles, and CV blades. I cut myself several times with that knife too. But I learned basic first aid and proper knife techniques.

Long story short, your kid wants the same type of knife you carry.

My first knife was an alox swiss army knife cadet. Looking back it worked out good for me.

two thumbs up the kid always wants what his dad's got!
plain and simple you nailed it.

I'm in the stockman, peanut or other traditional crowd. Something that fits his hand.

my kid got a little fixed blade for her first knife, I figure they're a little safer

This is the one I'm giving my son for his first. It's from the above mentioned retailer and cost 10 dollars.
