$100-ceiling for knives for most?

Dave,
I can't use that on my wife, she pulled that one on me with a full length red fox coat, (no, not the comedian), "Honey, you'll never believe how much I saved you!"

If, you haven't heard it I would definately try it first.

Paracelsus (sp?) You are quite right, it is an individual choice...I was curious to see where i stood among the others.
I too enjoy giving knives as gift (& always hold out my hand for a penny!) & I enjoy finding a real bargain, like the year I got my 2 hunting buddies a blackjack AWAC each (what a sale that was!!!). The best part is I've got them goin' knifeknuts so I got a really sharp X-Mas gift last year!

PhilL,
That's the beauty of it -- your wife will find the logic completely acceptable, because it's her logic.

I honestly don't know what the average price paid for a knife is on our site but I can tell you the average order is $108. That includes some orders of more than one knife, obviously, but it is an average. It's an average that's higher than I expected when I started the business.

My sense is that traditional knife retailers have a significantly lower average although I don't know what the average is.

I'm not exactly sure how this relates to the topic but, from my perspective, sales of knives over $100 are very, very common, at least with our on line knife store. Take care.

Although I'd never pictured $100 as a ceiling or a barrier, I had never spent more than that on a knife. When Senator put up his William Henry for about half again that amount, I didn't hesitate. As soon as I checked to see exactly which WH it was, I wanted it. Now I just have to wait for the nice mailman to deliver my newest aquisition. No regrets, and not even a second thought to the price, until I read this thread. Still no regrets, but the realization that my addiction just got more expensive.
Dave

I think the average person thinks a knife price of over 50.00 is pushing, it and i've had people almost pass out when I told them the price of 200.00 on some of my knives. Anything over that and I tell them, it cost quite a bit. I used to think 100.00 was a lot, then I gradually increased. Now I think my limit would be around 500.00 but I would have to really love the knife.

i keep hearing "user" vs. "trophy" as a determination for purchase.

i wonder how many people who won't buy a "trophy" have a expensive firearm that they actually need?
for example, i have a Springfeild M1A. i almost never shoot it, and when i do it is not for necessity (obviously).

to my mind this is the same as having an expensive folder in the drawer that you just flick open and admire once in a while.

there is little in life that one actually needs. I buy my knives based on wants, therefore money is always a secondary consideration.

the toughest question for me is once they're bought do i carry or put them in the drawer?
i wouldn't be to broken up if i lost the AFCK or Sifu i carry, but putting my new $385 Crawford Shark in my pocket is a tougher decision....

i tend to agree with you salamander. i try to refrain from telling exact prices i've paid when asked. i get some bizarre looks. unfortunately, i long ago passed the 100.00 limit. i think most of us say {never over $$$} at one point, but the more we get into it, the more easily we justify our expenditures.none of us need most of what we have, that's part of the pleasure of owning it... isn't it?

Knifeoutlet,
I brought this up again because of your post on balisongs. There are many people who would spring for one in this range($100 or less).

My personal limit so far has been S$100 (my local currency); tt works out to just under USD$60 - not very much, but it gets me by. ;P
