$100 for 3 Knives: Your Choices?

As you've seen from my recent posts I've been looking at A LOT of inexpensive knives, looking for a cheap flipper, looking for a quiet operating knife (so as not to irritate my wife as I fidget with it while watching tv), etc. During that time I was overwhelmed by how many lower cost knives there are that get fantastic reviews.

So I thought it would be interesting to pose this question: What three knives, for a total of $100 or less (brand new knives, current prices), do you feel offer the most "bang for the buck"?

They may be knives you already own, have owned, or knives you're wanting to purchase.

For me, a knife novice, I think my choices would be:

$50 Civivi Elementum (deep carry, flipper, a lot of hype, never tried a Civivi)

$30 Ontario Rat II* (silky smooth opening/closing, great size, thumb stud feels to be at a perfect spot for my hands, has held it's edge really well, just fun to use and reliable)

$20 This is where I really struggled...thought about the Ka-Bar Dozier Hunter 3" (never owned one, many say it's the best $20 knife out there, been around a long time, can get it in orange, etc); then I thought about the Spyderco Grasshopper (thumb hole is currently favorite way to open a knife); but I ultimately decided on the Swiss Army Knives Classic SD (for $20 you get a knife, scissors, nail file, screwdriver, toothpick, tweezers)

So, for $100, buying three knives (new knife, current price), in your opinion, how is your money best spent?

* Story time: my son, 13 year old HS freshman, has never really been the outdoors type and never showed much interest in my knives (or guns), started showing some interest in my knives over the Christmas break. Just asking about how they opened and what type I had. About ten days ago he asked if I could buy him a knife sometime, so hiding my extreme enthusiasm, I said sure. About five days ago I let him go through my knives and told him that he could choose one to use one until I bought him one of his own (birthday is in March). He chose my Ontario Rat II. He's been attaching it to whatever he's wearing around the house and carrying it ever since I gave it to him. I need to look up knife laws in NC to see if it's possible for him to carry it out (I know, definitely not to school) in public. Anyway, just thought I'd share my proud dad moment!

Here will be my choices, one from each group below:

Group A
$46 Spyderco Astute (I don't owe this, but it's Spyderco and I would love to give it a try)
$49 Spyderco Lightweight Tenacious (I have the Tenacious, and it's a great value folder)
$50 Ruike P135 (love this thing, a lot of knife for this money):

Group B
$32 Victorinox Climber (no one ever goes wrong with a SAK)

$30 Cold Steel Tuff Lite (Tri Ad lock, very functional in a small package)

Group C
$15-20 Mora Companion or Basic (Great value)

$20 Ka Bar Dozier (solid little knife, great ergo and design)

$22 Victorinox Spartan

Ontario Utilitac II. I like the tanto blade style, because recurves are hard to sharpen.

Another vote for Mora. If you're looking to wring the most value out of a fixed blade, it's hard to beat. I'm not a "bushie", so I would go with something from the "Craft" line.

For the last one, I'm going to bend the rules a little. The Camillus TL-29/Electrician can be bought as "new old stock" from the Bay, for around 25. I've seen them much lower, and much higher, too.

I encourage you to research for yourself, but there does not appear to be an age restriction in NC, although minors cannot be given "dirks" or "Bowie knives". As you correctly noted school carry is explicitly prohibited. The law actually defines an "ordinary pocket knife" which most folders would meet (the defining case involved a minor, FWTW). Surprisingly they don't have state preemption which I figured they might.

Man, my mood changes daily on this stuff... maybe hourly... I got Blade A.D.D.... BL-ADD-E.... Blade.D.D..... you get the picture.

But in THIS moment of time, with this particular $Franklin, let me peruse the knife counter:

I want a good fixed blade, so I'll grab a Small Bucklite Max II for $20. It's a marvel for the money. It's a lightweight easy carry that is ergonomic as all get out, simple to maintain and just a great cutter. It has a phenomenal warranty and it's made right here in the Good Ol' U.S. of A. Easily one of the best bargains in the knife world today.

A nice little disappears-in-your-pocket EDC is up next, and for $20 you really start admiring the Ka-Bar Dozier folding hunter. A great little blade shape, and I have absolutely no issues with AUS-8.... it gets super sharp with very little effort and is obviously insanely affordable. There's lots of color combos to choose from too.

And now I'm in the mood for a slipjoint, and the Case Pocket Worn Whiskey Bone Sod Buster Jr. is begging to go with me downtown and do some....

NO NO WAIT!... the Case Tony Bose smooth yellow synthetic Tribal Lock is the $60 diamond in the rough today and I'm reaaalllyy...

NOPE HOLD ON

Crap. Now I have 3 other choices. Imma quit right here.

Hard to answer from another country, but for roughly that money here, I’d second the Morakniv Companion, SAK Farmer, and throw in a Husqvarna camping axe for a Nessmuk/Kephart system. Everything you would ever need in the woods, blade wise, is contained therein. I think you’d have enough left for a pocket sharpener. Just sayin’ ;)

These Buck Bantams can be found well under $20 dollars on sale. The SAK Farmer in an incredibly useful knife for all things outdoors. I carry mine constantly in combination with my chosen carry for the day.

i have really been enjoying cold steels budget stuff, they actually have a ton of options in the 30 dollar range that are just fantastic like the double safe hunter, ranch boss 2, kiridashi, tuff-lite, bush ranger lite etc.......you can find the large 6 inch luzon flipper in the $30 dollar range sometimes also

in their 45-60 range you have some great options too like the cold steel ti-lite 4 and 6 inch, sr1 lite, voyagers.......the 6 inch ti-lite for $45-$55 is a great deal

if i had to choose only 3 it would be:

6 inch ti-lite
double safe hunter
tuff lite

Yeah, I have a Bantam knocking about. Great budget knife!

You looking to actually buy 3 knives for that price? I don't have 3 picks...I definitely fall into the buy 1 or 2 quality pieces than more cheaper ones. If your looking for straight up best value twosun has some great knives with premium steel for super cheap right now.

I will add though that its great your son is showing interest and your gona get him a knife. Definitely be sure to go over first aid practices with him as well though. Its inevitable that he's going to cut or stab himself at one point on accident. Its important he knows what to do in that situation.

Story of my wifes...when we first started seeing eachother her oldest son, probably 13 or 14yrs old or so at the time had a cheap pocket knife and from what I heard he basically put it through his hand while in his room messing with it. I guess he pulled it out and blood squirted out and hit the ceiling. The screaming and panic started and they had to make a quick trip to the emergency room...

I just did something similar. Had a handful of budget stuff that had been on my radar for a year or more. Went with Dozier folder, Buck 112 lite, purple Opinel no.6 for the lady, MAM sheepsfoot, and an Opinel no.12.

So the Buck is a damn good US knife for 20+$, has a very authoritative click when the lock engages.
No. 12 Opinel is ridiculous in the best way possible, feels like the original XL CS Voyager, Fit and finish on this 25$ specimen were really good.
Dozier is a great size but does feel a bit cheap due to the scale material, but fit and finish are very good, even if it came really tight.
MAM is about what you would expect F&F not quite perfect but a great example of a simple working blade, super finctional.
No. 6 Opinel, another very well made smaller offering, stiff in that fresh out of the box way, fits my wifes hand well(smaller hands)

After this I think its Svord and Higonokami to round out my "world of budget knives".

Hope this helps your fun decision.

How about:

Victorinox recruit-$20

Utilitac ll-$30

Buck Mesa-$45

This gives you a small, sheeple friendly SAK, a larger EDC, and a fixed blade for field use.

I wanted to do a Vic Cadet instead of the Recruit but, the cost would have put it over the limit.

I also was trying to figure out a way to get a Gerber MP600 in there instead of the Mesa. No go.

Man am I glad I got a Mesa a few years ago. They are harder to find now. I wish Buck would bring it back.
