So today I was cleaning some brush from the back yard. Cutting it up to use for fire wood later. For the big pieces I would either snap them off or use a sawzall. For the small twigs I used my kabar to cut them off and set to the side for tender.

As I was doing this I started thinking... I just bought this knife maybe a month or two ago... although it looks much older. Since I've had it I've used it to cut string, leather, cardboard, tree branches, baton fire wood, open bags of animal food, as a pry bar, to pull staples out of lumbar, and even tried to shave with it once. Even though it would be considered a combat knife I have used it for so many other things. Each day I find a new use for my knife.

So now now I'm stuck on thinking... what do the people here use their knives for, and what kind of blades do they own that get the most use.

I limit my knife usage to just cutting and slicing. My father was very particular about keeping his equipment in top form, and his father before him, so I have never been one to pry things or pull staples with a blade. But many folks do stuff like that. Many consumer items from knives to cars will last virtually forever if you take care of them, so that's how I ride. Rock on.

Yeah, I'm a bit of a knuckle dragger, so my knives (sometimes) get used for things they shouldn't.

A knife that doesn't feel like it's up to the task doesn't stay in the rotation long, for that reason.

In my defense, I carry other tools to keep from having to do this.

I've cut paper, plastic, hemp rope, and vulcanized conveyor belting.

I've pried out staples, even used the spine as a screwdriver (the knife was folded).

So, yeah. It's primary use may be cutting, but it does get used for other things.

I'm with powernoodle on this one. Right tool for the right job.

Cutting firewood with a sawzall - that's the first I ever heard of that!

I make no judgment against those who use their knives hard, and sorta live vicariously through them. Its just not for me.

well it was a large tree branch that fell down. Easier to a cordless sawzall than a chainsaw at this point. Mainly just cutting into logs right now. I'll do all my splitting tomorrow and for that I'll use an ax.

Here's a couple more I have used a knife for recently

Shave my face
Cut garden hose
Shave toe hairs off :)
Clean fingernails
Cut fuel line
Harvesting vegetables
Harvesting culinary herbs
Open mail
Open clamshell package containing another knife
Whittle wood
Cut wrapping paper while wrapping a gift
Cut loose threads
Slice food items

Never thought about the toe hair shaving thing.

Definitely have used knives to open packaging containing new knives! LOL

Used my Para 2 today to remove a nasty wood splinter that had bothered me for over a week.

Twice at work I got ice cream cake only because I had a knife to cut it (customers leaving The Keg from a birthday party...no utensils at the guard desk).

I stuck a hefty piece of cardboard on the blade of my SmF to make a handy "Knifebrella" when it was a mile walk to the bus stop from work through a heavy downpour.

I need to use a knife to pry open the charging port on my stupid falling apart cellphone (thumb nick busted off).

Removed staples from term paper for cute Asian girl at the university library (power stapler but no staple remover...)

Open boxes of whatever comes in a box.

Cut tape; my prototype museum exhibit on Dieppe had all tape cut with a Superhawk. :)

Cut rope, paracord, string.

Strip insulation off of wires.

Made some walking sticks.

Fire prep in woods.

Cut heavy rubber hose for chemical suction at the lab.

Food prep/eating/use as a barbeque tool.

Other stuff that slips my mind right now...whatever comes up that makes me say "Hey, I could do that...I have a knife."

I do the paper thing too. If I can make 5 clean hilt to tip slow cuts than I move onto trying to shave off some arm hair. Drives my wife crazy when I do that. For some reason she thinks I'm going to slip and cut myself.... which is probably true, but you gotta know for sure if you're knife is truly truly sharp :)

Forgot....
Opened a bag of coffee for an elderly couple who wanted to use the grinder at cosco, but coudn't get the bag open.

Actual face shaving is my favorite thing :)

A lot of these uses being listed are bad-ass, that is all.

I generally use balisongs for utility, also generally in a spear point blade.

I work in a production factory cutting everything from thread, to cargo straps, corrugated cardboard, thick plastic foam (sometimes up to 1/4 thick for embroidering clothing)

i must say, balisongs rock for utility.

Whoops... the OP asked what blades we used....

Here are my most carried and used edc knives at the moment...

The last thing I used my Sere 2K for was changing my daughter's oil.

See, I got the jack out... Damn, no jack handle. Used the handle end of a socket driver. When I went to let the car down I still had no jack handle and no screwdriver. My daughter asked me if I wanted her to go in the house and get a screwdriver. I said "nah, I'll just use this" - whipped out my Sere and used the spine to unscrew the jack release. No damage... and I do stuff like that all the time. I did however learn not to jam the tip into a Phillips head screw and try to use it as a screwdriver!
