first of all, its been a great first 1000, ive lerned a ton in my less-than-a-year here. so, ill be giving away a complete bowdrill fire set. spindle, fireboard, handhold, coal catcher, bow and some tinder. all regular passaround rules apply. must have been member for at least 3 months, must have at least 200 posts, and must frequent the WS&S area frequently.

WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO is post the single best peice of outdoor info you have ever heard. i cannot be anything general either, like "be prepaired" or somthing like that. make it somthing specific, but useful. dont post more than one bit of advice. i will pick the winner with a random integer generator in a few days. i will get some pictures of the bowdrill set up tomorrow or so.

Let someone know where you are going, and when you will be back, almost too simple but I am guilty myself of forgetting, myself, many times.
A note in your car wouldn't hurt either.
Thanks, I would love that bowdrill!

Always carry some sort of kit with you. Even if it's just a pack of matches and a SAK.

Tie your shoes (or boots) with paracord. Saved my a$$ acouple times... :D:thumbup:

Thanks for this chance!

it would be "never put yourself in that situation to begin with and if you do get into it, stay busy at all times"

That a only good knife will keep you alive in a survival situation. Your skills, preparedness, and state of mind will help you suvive a situation.

Stay Calm if in a situation. Sit down have a candy, swig of water, and think before acting.

I don't have 200 posts but will contribute anyway if it's ok. The use of PJ cotton balls as tender. That changed my firemaking world.

The best survival knife/tool is the one you have on you, so pack all the time!

The bowdrill set sounds awesome. Thanks for the oppurtunity!

starting campfires by pouring liquid Glycerine onto Potassium Permanganate.
this is a chemical fire without tinder.

I found that temperature or humidity plays a big part in how quickly the chemical reaction takes place. For this particular reaction, it took about four minutes for the smoke to start pouring off of it, and then the flames shot up.

DONT PANIC!

Stay calm and dont let your self get emotional, it just leads to poor decision making and mistakes.

(p.s. I've been posting here since oct/07 as sketchbag, just didnt care for the name anymore)

If you get lost, or turned around. Stay put.

A functioning bow drill set would be great. I made one for my scouts to try out, and we got a lot of smoke, but never got a fire going. Then my string broke.

This falls under the "Be Prepared", but its a motto I live by.

"Prepare for the worst, hope for the best"

My one to qualify for this contest is:
No matter how expensive and state-of-the-art your tools are, they are absolutely worthless without the right state-of-mind, knowledge, and experience.

Always try to know the general lay of the land as in there is a road some where to the north or a river to the south , this can really help in walking away from a bad situation.

Tell loved ones in advance where you are going to be. Then stay there when injured or lost.

This fits in so many areans.

Mindset
Tactics
Skill
Gear

That's the correct order of importance. Without the proper mindset you will die no matter how much of the latest and greatest gear you have. Begin with the fact that death is not an option. If you breathe then you have good enough reason to live.
