Congrats folks and thanks again for hosting this!

So, after a busy last week I was finally able to send off the first blade for contest winner cbwx34.

He chose to purchase a new ZT and have it shipped to me for the sharpening. The blade arrived to me with a very poor factory grind, edge angle of 30+ degrees per side, over and under grinds from the belt sharpening and a slight recurve that took some work to remove.

I went back and forth on how I was going to finish this edge, I was first thinking of taking it to a fine mirror polish but realized with the edge thickness and steel type that there was a certain way I could bring out the best in this knife. I finished the edge on a Coarse DMT followed by a generous helping of gentle stropping on a 1 micron diamond loaded balsa strop. This edge defines "toothy polished" with its aggressive but smooth cutting abilities and great edge retention.

Now on to the porn,

Awesome!!! Got an email... had to come check.

Looks great! Looking forward to seeing it.

Thanks mucho!!!

Not an entry but thanks for the kind giveaway. More importantly thanks for taking the time to contribute and help folks out. I learned a lot about sharpening from you guys and try to pass it on when I can.

edit: Haha, I just read up and saw the contest was already over. Good thing I didn't enter. Doesn't change the "thank you" part of my post though. :)

JasonB's sharpening dissected:

The short version... Wow!

The long version: Jason has supernatural abilities. Freehand bevels that rival any bevels I've seen on the best guided equipment. I expected a great edge, and it exceeded my expectations. Passes any cut test you can think of. I can't emphasize enough... even under a microscope... not a flaw.

Snapped a few pics real quick... doesn't do it justice. Remember, this is how the edge was sharpened...

(Kinda want to know what "generous helping of gentle stropping" is... guessing quite a bit).

Thanks again.... and Wow!

Thank you, cbwx34

I am very pleased to hear that!

It's about 15 minutes of slow controlled movements, probably not as many passes as you might think but enough to get the job done. The steel also takes on a polish very fast so that adds to the high amount of shine, kind of an unfair advantage but I'll take it ;)
